Grinding and flying Sparks

IT, focus. No one is talking about body protection. We're talking about damage to shop equipment in close proximity.

What do you use in your shop?

All of my welding tables are on swivel/lockable wheels and I roll them to the center of the garage for my projects.

When I grind, I just rotate the table so that the sparks are going out the 18' x 8' opened garage door.

I do also have a couple of HF welding blankets I use when I need to protect something I'm welding close to.

I thought about getting 2 welding curtains, but I would still need to direct the sparks into the curtains or rotate the welding table.

Just rotating the welding table to direct the sparks out the garage door works fine for me...

I assess the risk based on the circumstances, for personal injury, fire and ruining finishes with abrasive dust.

Try and grind outward from a building not showering anything I deem valuable, like a vehicle. Drives me carazy how many people blast all kinds of things with their grinders.

Simple Googles and Hearing proetection for PPE.

MOSTLY, and I have removed all grinder sheilds, is keeping track of the direction of a spinning disk, considering it may fail at any time. Had a ZIP disk fail (used inappropriatately) at a friends and the violence of it, surprised me.

I used to use just plain ole clear poly in the body shop. I bought it rolls. I had a few cables criss-crossing the shop so I could move curtains to different areas. You could probably use a shower curtain.

I don't understand why people run. grinders w/o shields. :confused3:

Maybe only the rare case where in a tight space that the shield won't fit. I think I have only taken one off once or twice for an odd situation.

As mentioned, a welding curtain would be ideal. Lightweight, portable , effective.

I bought mine on sale years ago from my LWS. $100 Cdn for the frame and curtain.

I looked at the Steiner link but they won't take credit cards, just pay-pal and two other methods I never heard of so they're out. I'll look a little closer at the Northern Tool link tomorrow.

My 3x5 weld table has a 1/2" thick top and it is not on wheels. It is a chore just to move it 6 inches.

My county is under a burn ban right now so I wouldn't want to aim the sparks out the door, besides, there are to many dried up corn stalks around my place. They make excellent kindling.
