I don't think anyone I know that owns grinders for a living has any guards on them. And come to think of it, they never wear any eye protection. But doing that for fifty years! Lucky or just doing things safely a certain way?
I have done very little grinding work where you don't have to repositon the grinder three or four times and a sheild DOES get in the way.
