I may be jumping the gun but I wanted to get this post up before I go through too many $20 springs.
I have a pre-2009 GT2542 with 200 hours on it and I just snapped the deck extension spring (MTD Part 732-3115). This is the spring that connects between the tension handle and the double pulley.
I went online and ordered a new part from Amazon with the understanding that I was receiving a genuine MTD part. The new part arrived, my daughter and I attached the spring and off we went to driving practice / mowing for approximately two hours before the part snapped again.
I'm uploading some pictures of the damaged part. The Amazon vendor is promising to ship a replacement part. In the meantime, I went to the commercial shop (mostly Scag and some larger Cub ZTs) where I bought my GT and picked up what appears to be the same part for the same money (minus the gas and time off work). I always ask those guys for suggestions on weird stuff I run into but I typically get the same response -- that shrug that reminds me they are really focused on the $10K-15K setups they sell to pros. Little old Cub GTs -- not so much.
At any rate, my "customers" are calling to tell me the grass is so high that criminals are able to use it for cover so I'm planning on hooking up the dealer spring in the next day or so. I'll pull the deck and look for anything weird but I'm not sure what to look for.
