One of the reason I like Glock as much as I do is their simplicity. It takes 5 sceonds (if that) to field strip for cleaning...

I always thought the Glock would have been a better sidearm to replace the old 1911...again, due to their simplicity and robustness. It's my understanding the military contract specified an external safety (which Glocks do not have). Don't quote me on that safety requirement...I'm pulling this from memory.

BTW, when I refer to the Glocks robustness, I'm specifically referring to the 9mm guns. The Glock was originally designed for 9mm (the Model 17) and those, IMHO, are the best models.

Jury is out for me on the military use of Glock, I'm sure there are some used in that role around the world.

I don't want to turn this into a Glock love fest, especially since OP didn't even mention the desire for one.
But the trigger safety thing is the one area that is a little sketchy to me, when I first saw it I thought it was pretty stupid, if there is going to be an AD/ND it's going to happen by depressing the trigger, kinda hard not to disengage the "safety" when depressing the trigger :confused2:

The only time I'd be concerned for myself is re-holstering into a conceal carry holster with the chance of getting some excess shirt tail wedged in there causing a discharge.

There are some after market safeties I see out there.

No doubt per unit cost has played a part in the adoption of Glock by so many Law Enforcement Agencies, but you really need to do some research on the initial testing of these guns before they were considered acceptable if you believe cost was the only or over riding factor.

Yup, the infamous torture tests, never heard of that with other brands.

I'm talking about Glock as first choice for personnel protection. Not beauty, price, collectors value, sporting competition etc.
Strictly those most critical factors you want for personal protection. Extreme reliability first. Accuracy, simplicity, capacity and weight also contribute.

Same here, I actually had to be made to use the Glock as did not like them at all. As mentioned, I have S&W, Sig, Beretta, Colt etc. and love the craftsmanship, but like the Glock for what it is, a very effective, reliable, reasonably priced tool.

Well that's a contradiction, in one sentence you say they're so prevalent because the LE agencies got a good deal and then you say they're not worth the money :confused2:

Which is it? Personally I'd pay pay twice as much if I had to, to own what some would argue to be the most reliable pistol.

If you stick to your theory that they are in LE service more than all other brands combined because they are cheap, that could be a reasonable argument, we know government agencies go with the lowest bid.
But don't, in the same sentence say they're not worth what they cost.

They keep it simple as posible, 35 parts total. So many parts are interchangeable.

I'm not sure they would be better than the M9 for military service, but in my opinion for personal protection, you would be short changing yourself if you didn't start with glock and narrow down to another choice only if there was something about Glock that didn't work for you.

A great Glock video for beginners, I just found on detailed dis-assembly

What we pay for them and what they pay for them are two different prices, Don't spin it

Obviously, you don't know your firearms!

Ruger makes outstanding revolvers (got 3 of 'em)...they seem to have trouble with the semi-autos though. At least two recalls on Ruger semi-autos that I can think of...the SR9 and the LCP (I have one of those...so that means I have 4 Ruger handguns)....

when i was looking for a small carry.. i looked at the lcp.. but ended up with a keltec ( 2 actually.. a p32 and then a p3at when it came out ).. for regualr carry though.. I like my sig p230

have a few spare mags.. but they weren't cheap.. even for a single stacker..

just have never gotten used to a glock.. and it's not the poly issue. i love my keltec stuff.. I even have one of their ar15 types.. a su16c

it's just the clunky look of the gun. remonds me of a high point :) ( ouch! )

not knocking high point either.. I got one of their carbines in .45acp... shoots fine.. just don't like their 'big as a brick' pistols :) if I want to carry a large heavy semi-auto, I have some of those old COP 38/357 4 shot tip up bbl 'derrengers'.. 4 rounds of 38 spl or 357mag..and if that ain't enough.. throw the empty gun at em as it weighs a ton!!!

...not pretty, very utilitarian...and very reliable. Reminds me of me...

ROTFLMAO!!

now that's darn funny! :) you sir, have a great sense of humor!

Donn12,
My best advice is to shoot as many guns as you can before buying anything else. Rent them, borrow them, just don't steal them. Different guns feel different in different people's hands. I have nowhere near the most experience with guns or the most guns on this website, but I have a little of each.

I have owned a sig 229 in .40. Great gun, it was my first carry gun, and was really too heavy for that. It was a great range shooter, the weight of the gun made the recoil negligible. I also liked that it had the decocker for carrying. I sold it because I wanted a gun better suited for carrying

I got a smith M&P40c. Great gun, felt better in my hand than glocks, although the gen 4's are pretty nice. The M&P line are great. Glocks are great, Rugers are great. Shoot a lot and see what you like.

You had mentioned a ruger markIII. I had a mark II 22/45. I liked that gun except for the takedown. It wasn't impossible, but it wasn't easy either. I sold that in part because I knew I could get a smith 22a new for only a little over $200. I got a 7" barrel and like that gun. Really easy to take down, a rail to add a scope to, and a nice plinker.

Really though, get the guns that feel comfortable and that you will shoot. If I were you, I would try to minimize calibers for ease, but if you want one of every flavor that is your call too.

Have fun and be safe.

That applies to almost anything bought in bulk..you can get the same pricing, but you'll have to buy 200 of 'em.
Even without the discount, Glocks are relatively inexpensive...priced a box stock Colt 1911 recently?

You can't even copare the two. thats like comparing your deere to a cub cadet

OK how about to that Ruger, Are they much cheaper. I personally would not group the 2 in the same class myself though.

My gun store has any Glock you want except 45 and 357 for $499. for gen 3's and $549. for gen 4's.
Probably the best prices you will see due to their high volume sales.

I was shocked to see the prices on Ruger revolvers, no more the poor man's gun!
