We have a double action S&W Airwieght but she doesn't have enough strength in her hands to pull the double action trigger

You can take the smith to a good gunsmith and get the trigger pull lightened quite a bit...may want to go talk with a gunsmith about it...

I am going to have to back into the right gun for her. She does have a healthy respect for guns. I plead guilty for that. I will have to buy the right gun and it's going to have to be a darn good one. She doesn't do stupid twice. The Airwieght for sure isn't going to cut it.

Here is one other little thing, I have instructed several women with low strength in their hands. I normally recommend a good "slicked up" DA revolver, some can be set up with very slick, DA pulls. But if that don't work out for you, There is a method to pulling back the slide of an autopistol that can be of some aid. Here is what you do: Don't pull back the slide with your left hand, just grasp it as hard as you are able and with your right hand thrust forward the grip of the handgun.. This is just the opposite of what most people do to rack the slide. You will be surprised how much difference this makes, give it a try.

The limitations of rheumatoid arthritis are a little strange. Some things she does very well. She takes care of the horses and trims their feet with a hoof knife a couple of times a month. Trimming horses is not an easy thing to do even with healthy hands. The joint movement and hand strength is simply limited in some ways. She can not remove lids from jars. She is not weak or frail. A double action revolver is simply not doable for her. She can operate the slide on our Ruger Mark ll easily. A double action trigger is simply something that her hands will not do.

Then I think an easily operated .22 semi-auto might be what you are looking for. Is it a one shot stopper?.. No not usually, but the mag holds 10

Is it her pointer finger or thumb or both that is limiting? I think you are on the right track with a smaller caliber revolver for a couple of reasons. Revolver foolproof, and if she can cock it with her thumb, she should do well and not worry about the recoil. Someone suggested a 357 with 38 bullets but that is still quite a punch for a lady.

I have a couple Browning Buck Marks that are real nice for fun shooting 10 shot clips took a few hundred rounds to loosen up enough for easy cambering but after that have been real nice. It has pretty much no real recoil and very accurate.
