I hadn't thought about 22Mag. It seems like I have bought and sold a half dozen of the long barrel cowboy single shots with both 22 and 22Mag cylinders. I know I find my 22Mag rifle one of my best all around weapons. It is a great truck gun. Will kill a snake or a coyote, and lots in between.

My wife is a petite gal and has trouble stovepiping a 9mm pistol. She used a friends Walther P22 .22lr at the range to qualify for her CC permit with no problem. She carries a S&W Airweight .38 revolver. My sister who shoots a 9mm pistol well is getting a little Taurus 738 TCP .380 pistol for her CC sidearm. She said it is small enough it won't pull her pants down.

I own a gunshop and do smithing as well. here's a few comments i have for older ladies that have a hard time charging the slide of a pistol. I have had many come in the shop wanting something else because they no longer could run the slide back.

What your wife can try is to grip the slide between the thumb and ALL four fingers of the left hand and then push your hands together.....sort of like a hug motion. There is a tremendous amount of force gained this way instead of gripping the rear of the slide with the index finger second knuckle and thumb and pulling.

Another tip for lightening the trigger pulls on revolvers.......
Most lightening of the trigger is done through the hammer springs, total contrary to what we would think of lightening as an actual trigger spring. Any double action only revolver has a bobbed hammer or all of the spur removed. These revolvers with bobbed hammers have MUCH less hammer mass and need stronger springs to set off a primer. If you wanted to lighten a trigger you would need to seek out a revolver with a full hammer profile and then begin messing with the hammer spring to gain a softer double action pull.

I have found the Beretta tip up barrel pistols or the Taurus knock offs appeal to ladies as they do not have to run the slide at all to operate them. You just flip a button and the barrel pops up and you drop in a round and close the barrel.....the rest is simple magazine operations.

Good luck!!

This is very good advice. I think Bird is telling me the same thing. She is very comfortable shooting a .22 caliber and if I try anything bigger it would be too much for her. A shot taken with something small is much better than no shot taken at all. I need to find something that she will be comfortable with instead of worrying about firepower.

Berretta Bobcat 22 cal. requires no rack of the slide to load the gun by using the tip up barrel. Berretta also has a similar pistol the Tomcat that comes in 32 cal. for a bit more power. Beretta 22 Berretta 32

Loaded with hollow points, a .22 will take care of anything your wife needs it for.

I haven't even seen one of those in many, many years. When I started on the police department in 1964, the police range had a bunch of them. You know a lot of people who go into law enforcement have never shot a gun before, so the first time on the range, the .22s were used, before going to the .38s. And of course my issued gun is a K model .38 with a 4" barrel.

She has mentioned selling the K-22 Masterpiece. I simply won't part with it. It is one of the best guns that I have ever owned. Long or short. It has a crispness and precision when cycling the action that I have yet to see in any another gun.

I think the S&W K models in any caliber are just fine guns. When I took the FBI pistol course at Quantico in 1986, the primary weapon they were using then was the same K model .38 that I have. They were just starting to go to semi-autos, just as my department was. And while I like my 9 mm Sig Sauer, I can still shoot a better score with my old K model .38 even shooting double action only.
