Gun safe question, are they really safe?

Really, the important part is to have layered protection. A well designed security system, valuables concealed well or in an anchored safe. What's "well", maybe not better than a safe, but how about removing the plastic cap on the ironing board leg, diamonds and expensive jewelry get wrapped an a cloth and into they go. Nobody EVER steals an ironing board!

Bad guys sometimes cut phone lines, so the alarm system needs radio back up, if the company doesn't offer that, then cellular back up. I prefer radio, as cellular sometimes goes down, a packet radio system uses multipath communications, every other radio can act as a repeater - reliable.

Not sure if they are good or not. How long will it take you to give him/her the combo when they are beating your wife with a crow bar? Read too where the robbers knocked a hole in the wall from outside (think how easy it really would be), wrapped safe in chain, hooked to truck, and dragged it through the wall to the outside. Entire safe is theirs with time to open.
A brick wall would be pretty hard to knock through. A quality safe weighing over 1,500 pounds isn't exactly something 3 guys can toss in the back of the truck.

Heard about a girl that went on vacation and wrapped her high end diamonds in freezer paper and hid them in the freezer. Neighbor kept an eye on the house. Power went out for a while and the neighbor being helpful cleaned the freezer out and hauled everything to the dump !

Easy as pie. If they want it, they'll get it. They do it all the time with ATMs. They smash through brick walls, glass doors and parking pillars to get inside. They don't care about the vehicle because it's usually stolen also. They'll even steal a backhoe or excavator from a nearby construction site and destroy half the building to get at it and load it in a truck. Then they just drive off and leave the mess.

They have to know that it is in there first.

Oh me, boys, just when I am really wanting a gun safe! Wha' to do, wha' to do? I reckon my hound, me armed and home most of the time, dead end road with only one way in/out, signs with my security stuff on it (SimpliSafe), my neighbors all armed and ready watching out for each other, maybe I'll be okay... Wow, some of them jerk thieves y'all told about are persistent! That one about pushing safe downstairs is the worse!

Bolt your safe to the concrete floor in your basement. Won't fix everything, but it will help. It is all about time. If they have the time and the proper tools, they are going to get it. You can't stop crime with a safe if they are persistent. The only thing you can do is slow them down, and hope the leave from fear of getting caught. That is why the aforementioned multilayered approach.

I have a Liberty "Centennial" (Costco) safe upstairs, and a larger, double door safe by The Safe Company | Gun Safe | Visalia, CA 93292 - Home next door above the RV garage. The difference in quality is striking, to say the least, the box store safe has gaps around the door wide enough to easily allow a pry bar easy purchase. You couldn't get a hanky in what passes for a gap on the Visalia safe, and the quality goes beyond skin deep.

Another way safe doors are opened is by "peeling". Instead of using a large prybar that cannot be inserted in a gap, the bad guys take a big sledge hammer and start pounding in on a distance from a corner. The metal starts to peel up from the pounding giving them purchase to start a large prybar. There are all sorts of ways if a crook is determined enough. But you do have to remember to turn on the oxygen:laughing:.. That story just cracks me up..
