Gun shows

   / Gun shows #21
I went to one last Sunday. I heard somebody make the comment "With these prices who needs gun control"
I saw a used Python with a 4" barrel going for $2000. Does anybody rember what they cost 20 or 30 years ago?

I had 2 that I purchased in the early 80's, a 4' and a 6". They were in the $350 to $400 range if I remember correctly. I then went through a phase where I got rid of all my revolvers and went strictly semi-auto. Sure wish I had those Pythons back.

I wouldn't pay the price for a Python with 4" barrel but the reason they are so highly sought is because there were so few made. A 6" barrel length is much cheaper at around $1000 but the 4" can go for over $3 grand if in perfect condition and never fired.

One must know the prices of guns to take advantage of them if buying at a gun show. If I want a gun, I can buy one from my neighbor who has tons of them in every caliber, style and brand and usually get something thrown in to boot, like a holster and or boxes of bullets.

I still enjoy going to the shows just to see all the stuff selling. The last show, a guy was selling shotgun barrels and had about 500 of them. I couldn't see ever getting or selling that many shotgun barrels. I asked one guy about it and he said most shotguns are good for about 30,000 rounds and then need to be replaced. I couldn't imagine me ever wearing out a shotgun even if I somehow could go back in time with my gun and start over with one at 15 years old. I just don't shoot 100 rounds per week average all year long.

I've never been to a gun show. I've seen guns bought and sold at flea markets many, many years ago but not lately. How does an individual sell a handgun now-a-days if he doesn't have friends, relatives, or neighbors who want it?

Bird you need to take off and go to the big Tulsa show sometime. I think about 4000 vendors. You really can't see it all. But you can usually find something you are interested in. I haven't been in years, but the trips the wife and I did make there were memorable.

I am always looking for one of the few S&W model 66's made with a round butt 3" barrel and HiViz sights. I have found them at shows, unfortunately those that had them knew what they had and wouldn't budge on price. 2 1/2" guns are plentiful but they have a shorter ejector rod and don't fully fling out empty case.

I would settle for a fixed sight 3" round butt 65 though. My wife has one but that is hers and she wants diamonds or a new car for it in exchange.

I purchased a Mod. 66 in 1978 I was an aux. officer at the time. Believed I paid $186.00 new at the time prices are crazy for used in good shape now.

My uncle gave me this years ago, told me that a friend of his took it off of a German Officer. I don't know only what I was told.

I prefer the small size of the 5 shot .38 S&W revolvers, and I guess my hands are big enough that I like square butt and have a grip adapter added to the model 36 that I still carry when I carry. I bought it new in 1964 and the gun, a holster, box of ammo, and sales tax came to $54.80. The last time I saw one in a pawn shop, they wanted $350 for it.

There was a time when I hunted, went target shooting, etc. and would have enjoyed the gun shows. But now . . . well, I sold most of my guns and gave a couple of old .22 rifles to my grandson. One was my Dad's and the other was his sister's. I also had bought two of the Dallas Police Commemorative S&W model 66-2, 357s, when they were first made; gave one to each of my daughters. So now all I have are a Sig Sauer P229DAK, 9mm, that I'd like to sell and the two S&W .38s that I carried on and off duty for nearly 25 years; wouldn't part with them.

Bird this is my off duty carry now. Small comfortable 1911. Nicer to shoot than the full size Glock 45 that is issued.
