Guns, Banks & Wild West Texas

Canada is just more civilized than most of the world, the rest of us just adapt.

I don't know about that LOL!

Thanks for the info.

I have no personal experience for this opinion, but I believe carrying a gun and being able to use one well under stress, and making correct split second decisions is not in the realm of the average citizens capability. I know - very few of us think we are average :)

Dave.

I agree with this 100%. The required training is a joke. I have been through Defensive pistol training that involves 4 days of situational awareness training, shoot don't shoot scenarios, and even did room clearing. At the end the instructors worked individually to debrief and test our learning. The biggest take away was that we all hoped we never feel a need to use our skills. We also understood the grave opportunity for errors. In the house clearing I think every one of us made a fatal mistake involving someone else and we all were considered dead a number of times. And this was after 40 plus hours of hands on live fire training. What we did come away with was a high degree of confidence that if engaged, we could accurately fire at and down a bag guy in multiple situations at rather long yardage. That is the part for average JoeCCW that scares me. I doubt that 10% have any accuracy or weapon management understanding and would likely miss or shoot themselves in a real situation.

Id highly recommend the training to anyone with an interest in really getting to know your ability and to become a safer gun owner.

The average citizen does not get a CCL. It costs a day plus about $150 for the class plus $400 to $1000 for a weapon and associated equipment. That's if your carry technique fits with your current wardrobe. If not, add a new wardrobe to the cost.

In my full day class, everybody passed the accuracy test, a total of 50 rounds per person were fired at different distances, all self defense ranges. Multiple students were current or recent military with weapons training there. Out of 20 some students, IMHO, all but two were already familiar and adequately experienced with their weapon.

I, too, doubt that 10% would miss or shoot themselves in a real situation:thumbsup:

Agreed, more training is always better, practice is always good. I don't plan to go around cleaning any rooms .... that is WAY beyond a self defense scenario. I hope that I never have to use my skills, but would like to take a 4 day defense class some day.

No one knows if they will be able to use a gun properly under stress.

Unfortunately, true even of well trained police officers, and fortunately, most of us never have to find out.

The required training is a joke.

I don't really know about other states, but it's sure true of the CHL course in Texas. The shooting test is so simple as to be ridiculous. But I think more important than the ability to shoot well, is the ability to determine when NOT to shoot.

...and like most other fences, the grass on the other side of the 500th post fence is not so much better than on this side.;)

To those that wonder if "more guns = more crime" should read about the research of Dr. John Lott. Use Google or go to www.johnlott.org The cities with the toughest gun laws have the higher violent crime. They argue that the higher crime requires the tougher laws.

John Lott's research seems to argue the other way. My opinion is that this push to tougher laws is politicians pandering to irrational fears.

Are you an Old Hippie...TXDon? I scrolled thru the forum and like it! I missed the Hippie era by about 10 years, however.

I have had a concealed weapon permit for at least 20 years, (different states). It is refreshing to see something like that in this day and age of pampered socialism. South Carolina still has an independent streak but keeps getting in the news for the wrong reasons. Living in Texas must really be something! Hurrah to Texas and God save the Queen!

Nope, I missed it by about 5 years. Hippies were so 60ish/flowerchildish we were the cool 70's. Being Texjas and close to the coast in high school you were either a "kicker" (agg) or a "surfer" (cool). I had surf racks on my pinto (not a horse).
