Well, it's 8:02 Monday morning & things don't look too bad. No power outages here yet, but several feeder bands have come through. Good luck Tally - - I am just now seeing your post from last night - - I think you will be OK where you are on River Road. My trees occassionally do the St. Vitas' Dance, but nothing serious yet. So far, NOTHING like Katrina.

Mornin TDOG & others in the line of FIRE! Considering my experience yesterday & the timing on U'r 1st email. STAYING is the only option.... I had previous plans to be in Alexander on Tuesday morning so I waited for my sweet bride to get off Sunday Morning & then to head to Cental Louisiana! Mind You it was an ALMOST have to be there situation! Anyway my rte was gonna be headin straight NORTHEast to Jasper Tx then Leesville La. & cut across to North La...Just to miss the evacuation out of Miss/La..I'm in Dayton which is about 40 miles east of HouTex on Hyway90! Anyway I left at about 10AM & was rerouted in Liberty, 12 miles from home, to go to Livingston on 146 & we crept most of the time at speeds that would not make the speeometer show...We made it to Livingston at about 2PM & I got a call from La. that my appointment was postponed when we were somewhere around Woodville Texas we turned around & headed back home.. Appartly Marshall Law had been enacted in EAST TEXAS cause the Gustsopo(ms) wouldn't let people go down certain rte anyway to make a simple story complex, I guess, at about 5PM I made it back to my house & had rolled up about 188 miles on the car! BOY was I glad to get home....So leaving yesterday on the GULF COAST may not be a wise option & not get a person anywhere...

roho - - yeah, I understand there were evacuaton-traffic issues over here too. Glad I wasn't in it. Here's the problem: the storm was going to the west of New Orleans, therefore, going west on I-10 was not good. People were advised to evacuate to the north and east. As I understand it, however, traffic was diverted north onto I-59 and not allowed to continue east on I-10. If your destination was family/friends in Florida, you were flat out of luck. Apparantly Mississippi did not want people from Louisiana clogging that artery & preventing folks from the Mississippi gulf coast from using it. The local news reports that gas stations along I-59 [in Picayune & Poplarville] ran out of gas. About 25 vehicles ran out of gas along that highway. Yeah, they should have been prepared & filled up as the storm approached. Whatever, it must have been quite a mess. I'm just reporting what I've heard on the news - - I sure wasn't there or talked to anyone who was.
Bottom line - - if authorities want residents to evacuate [and several parished have mandatory evacuations for the 1st time in history], they need to figure out how to make it as painless as possible.

Lots of limbs down here now, but that's normal in any strong thunderstorm.

My parents rode out this one at their house (Covington. La). They lost power at 0945 yesterday. The phones still worked. Lots of rain and moderate gusts My dad is a 30+ year Navy man so he was telling me the EXACT wind speed!!! No flooding at their place.

Today, still no power. It appears that the power outage is very widespread. My parents report blue skies and the radar seems to verify that they are between rain bands. Folks are starting to return to their homes, but the stores still have no power. Unless you are compeletly self sufficient now is not the time to start back home as the gas stations have no power..

Power arrived at my parents house at 2030 last night. However, it still appears that the nearby shopping center (Target, etc.) did not have power this morning. Slowly the power grid is being repaired.

Looks like progress is being made.

Just checking in - - 1st time since the 1st when Gustav hit. Shortly after posting, we lost power. My popane gernerator kicked on as it was supposed to. We spent the rest of the day watching the tree limbs & debris build up, but no downed trees to deal with. At least at my place, this is nothing like Katrina. I will not even need to use my chain saw for clean up - - after Katrina, I lived behind a chain saw for weeks & months.
We did have a few generator problems. The Gardian 15kw generator is supposed to run one of my heat pumps & the rest of my house, I was just warned not to run both AC's at the same time. About 9 PM Monday, my daughter wanted to warm a hamburger in the microwave and the generator died. The 'hi temp' light was on. That is a safety feature - - it is supposed to restart automatically when it has cooled sufficiently. It was raining torrents at the time so there was not much I could do. Monday night was pretty miserable. I would never have considered staying if we could not run an air conditioner. Whatever, it never did come back on. I fiddled with it the next day without success. Finally, about 2 PM Tuesday I decided to try again, so I flipped the switch to auto, & it started. OK by me. I have no explantion for what went on. So, we had generator power through last night OK. The Propane Co. even showed up to top off my tank - - finally. I had called them Wednesday of last week. Happily, our power was restored just after 8 this morning. Ah.
BTW, Rocky, we are ~~ 15 miles north of Covington.
Don't know our rain total - - my gage overflowed. That's at least 5.5"
I'm posting a few pics from right around my house.
Wonder how Tallyho did?

Jack
