Gutters!

   / Gutters! #21
I use to round up anyone who was "handy" to get in the apple box, but these days, my wife climbs in the box and I just drive slooow along the eve while she cleans the gutters...

I did install a hydraulic lock on the loader arm circuit, so as I drive, the loader arms are locked into position.

But why not install Gutta Gard for a few hundred bucks and a little time, and be done with it for ever?

Quiet!! His wife may figure this out!

Gutters are highly over-rated. I bought my house 6 years ago, and there was one 6' open ended gutter over the front door, no down spouts etc. I did the responsible thing and had gutters installed around the entire house. Now they fill up with pine needles and overflow. Before, the water was spread out evenly over the entire roof, and I had no problems. Now, water from hundreds of square feet of roof is funneled into 8 downspouts, and my basement leaks because there is too much water in 1 place! Glad I spent lots of money to have them installed!

I have most of my downspouts hooked to underground drain pipe (solid to 10+ feet away from the building and then perforated). It's not that much work and permanently solves the water problems.

Anyone tried the Easy-On? Fine mesh stainless steel. Mesh is supposedly small enough that roof gravel will not clog. Ads suggest that it is highly rated by some well known reviewers.

EasyOn 5" Gutterguard 100'

I have big 6" gutters, so would need their pricier "supersized" that runs about $250/100ft. They sent me some sample pieces in each size. Seems well made and the mesh really is tiny.

That lip on the front looks like it is close to 1/4". I'd be afraid that would trap too much debris.

I think the effectiveness of various gutter guard designs varies with the kinds of trees you are dealing with. What works for maples may be no good for pine needles.

So if you are happy or unhappy with your gutter guards, tell us what kinds of trees you have!

BTW, several years ago on This Old House they were demonstrating the kinds of guards with the rounded lip at the edge, the kind where the water clings to the guard and goes into the gutter and the debris goes over to fall on the ground. As they were showing it, half the debris went into the gutters!

I too have been looking for gutter guards of some kind for my shop. There's a couple of fir trees that plug them up. During fall and winter I have to clean them out about every month. Usually in the rain.

I have cedars that drop their spines/needles and oaks, which drop flowers in the Spring, and lots of leaves in the fall.

I've see two test with gutter guards, on both, when a heavy rain was pouring down waaaay too much water went over the gutters, that's exactly the water I want to catch...

Is it really too much work to go out 2 times a YEAR on a nice day and clean them? My wife says she enjoys going out and doing small jobs like that with me, and I enjoy having a wife who feels that way...

Great timing. We just signed a contract to get gutters and guards installed. The "100% no clog" option ended up being just under $6400 installed. We have a walkout ranch home with a very convoluted roofline, so that added a lot of linear feet and a bunch of two-story downspouts.

For $6400 I could clean gutters for a long time. I think these professional gutter installations are a big rip off. Do it yourself for a few hundred. So what if it is not a continuous topper... you don't notice the 4 foot sticks.

Our home is surrounded by tall white pines that drop enormous quantities of needles. Between our extremely busy work schedules and with the twins on the way we have better ways to occupy our time than cleaning gutters.

And we're in the middle of extensive home renovations (every surface on both floors that isn't tile or stone is getting touched). Originally, we had a three year plan. Now, my wife wants it all done before the twins are born. I can't add more projects to the docket right now.

It's too much work to go out every month in a rain storm because it rarely stops raining here in the winter.

I'm very pleased with the gutters and downspouts I installed in Austria...

Copper half pipe with forged copper brackets and 4" copper downspouts...

It's been 30 trouble free years... hoping for at least another 70

Similar to these....

Euro Copper Double Curled Fascia Hanger - Gutter Supply

Euro Copper Gutters | Half Round Gutters - Gutter Supply

I love the look of copper gutters, but with the copper thieves around here I'd be afraid they'd be stolen within a day of installation.

I've thought about that... at least it has not been a problem in Austria with the home empty much of the time...

They do look good and last... and I really like the half pipe design so the entire flow is not impeded.

Overthere... copper has really the only gutters that are commonly found...

Maybe a fence charger would be a deterrent?
