Guy run over by backhoe, killed

This is extremely sad. This happened this morning. I was listening to the scanner as it happened.

I've been trying to figure out why the backhoe popped into gear and backed over him. If he bumped a lever getting off, I would think he would be able to clear it.

THe shuttle is just an electric switch and easy to bump into gear un noticed. THe main transmission was probably in 2nd and the TC probably just let it creep backwards. I got off a 455 FOrd hoe one time and my shirt hung it and I had gotten off and walked behind it to pick up a shovel. I had set the bucket on the grass but hears it rub a rock is what saved me I never heard it comming.

Man, that is sad. I work in the mining underground industry, and every year miners are killed by roll overs from equipment. Pre operational safety checks are vital to ones survival when operating just about any type of equipment. Red zones is another topic that seems to aviod our thought process when working on our own projects. Always mount and dismount in a safe manner, avoid loose fitting clothing that can catch on controls or become entangled in moving machine parts, and maintain a safe distance from running equipment when walking around the machine. Best practice is to de-energize the machine prior to dis mounting it. I do several accident investigations each year involving this type of injury or fatality.
I don't mean to sound like safety inspector, but we all have someone who loves and or needs us.
