Can't imagine anything safe on a tractor at 20+ mph, even without a trailer. Mine tops out just over 15, and anything over about 10-12 feels like you're flying, at least to this old fogey!

You have to wonder about the product liability implications of having overly generic legal disclaimers like that. Picking up what I said in an earlier post, some idiot will no doubt try to go 24mph on one if it says that's the limit.

What's even weirder is the manual is loaded with warningss
like on every page, over and over and over.

They aren't color coded or different from each other. The
warning about damaging the finish looks exactly like the
warnings about how to REALLY damage the tractor.

I made some jokes about this on the Deere board. My wife was
fine with BX, she knows not to run an engine in the garage
sealed up, warmups etc, but this manual made her think twice
about ever getting on the thing. I'm going to copy out the
important stuff. If I was unfamiliar with tractors (or at least
less familiar) I'd be a bit nervous with the volume of warnings
as well. When I sold my BX I banged out a list of about 20
things while I was waiting for the buyer to show up and then
went over everything with him and asked to him please call or
email if he ever had any questions and tried to let him know
that everyone has questions starting out or even with a
different tractor.



This thing with the tow ratings makes me wonder what they
are thinking.

12 mph is too fast for me, short wheelbase, high CG, no suspension.
Too fast even on pavement.

Deere must have a hard time denying any warranty coverage
for people towing too much.

Maybe they have a 38 inch rear wheel option to get the speed
up there?

I've seen folks towing big (4x8) utility trailers with
teensy garden tractors or rather riding lawnmowers.

Heck maybe I can tow that 12K trailer!

Going further off topic with this. I recall seeing some historical info about a Minneapolis Moline large farm tractor, probably from the late 40s, early 50s, with a cab and a SUPER road gear. It was planned to be a farm tractor by day and a town-mobile by night. It had a cab, which was rare in those days, and was hyped to be the family roadster PLUS being the tillage workhorse. It boasted a braking system that would control the beast from that speed.

IIRC, it would go 30-40 MPH!

I don't think they were very popular, and how I learned about it was a buddy of mine was looking at building cast iron toys of that model. I forget the model name/number, but it gave me the creeps thinking of going that fast on a tractor.

That M-M was the UDLX, priced like a car in the $1900 range, had roll up windows, a clock, heater, a radio and wipers. My book says only 128 were built and the speed was a top of 40 mph, and in Canada they were used to deliver mail. Would be fun to drive one, but pity the poor farmer who used the tractor in real hot weather, enclosed cab and no A/C.

I grew up running an M&M U for my uncle. As I recall it had a hand clutch, which would seem real squirrely trying to disengage it going 40+. Maybe the UDLX didn't use a hand clutch, or maybe the years difference changed the clutch configuration.

As I recall that U had a pretty fast road gear (maybe 18MPH) as we drove to ground 20 miles away to work. This one was on propane, ran like a champ, but didn't have power steering as I recall. Sure spent a lot of summers dragging a plow or disc behind that tractor.

WAY off topic now, looked up a little more info on the UDLX and it cost $1000 more than a standard model, had bifold rear doors and a jump seat, the 40mph speed was accomplished with a fifth gear. It looks like something out of a cartoon strip (my opinion). Now I can shut up.

The diversity of info that the members of this forum possess is incredible ! Never cease to amaze Gentlemen! But, back to the original post...... It's my understanding that hydraulic fluid temps should run approx. 100 degrees (F) above ambient. I was also once told that the hardest thing on a hydro unit was to run full speed long distances, such as across town. Apparently when hydro is at full flow it doesn't allow as much time to cool before it's run back thru system and thus begins to overheat the fluid. As long as system is run between forward and reverse it will take quite a bit of abuse as it has sufficient time to cool. These words of wisdom were passed on to me from a Cub Cadet mechanic in regards to an old 1650 I once owned.

Wonder what would be considered long distances? I used to run both my B7100 and my B2710 wide open 6 to 10 miles at a time and never had any reason to think it was doing any harm.
