Re: Guys on Buying forum are freakin\' me out @ HST.

The guy who does the baling of the widow's meadow down below has a fairly new, big JD. He said its trans and hydraulic elements get too hot to touch while he's doing the haying. So, it's not just HSTs that get hot. Sounds as though they're designing them too close now. Probably used to have some extra room in the coolers, etc. because they didn't have enough prediction tools to cut it closer.

You know something doesn't have to get just real hot to be too hot to touch; don't all engines and transmissions reach that point when they're warmed up? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: Guys on Buying forum are freakin\' me out @ HST.

You could run that hydro across Texas and you are not going to hurt it.The forward and back motion allowing it time to cool should not even be a consideration. Get on the tractor and use it and forget about this hydro failure discussion. Just maintain the fluid and service the hydro according to the book.

Re: Guys on Buying forum are freakin\' me out @ HST.

I'm not an engineer, but it seems to me that if your hydro system uses a radiator for cooling purposes, then the faster your tractor travels the higher the airflow through the radiator and the greater the cooling. And if you are running the engine full speed in the process the fan should assist with keeping the hydro oil temp down.

Go ahead and tell me I am wrong, I admitted I am not an engineer.....

Re: Guys on Buying forum are freakin\' me out @ HST.

As the owner of a manual, a shuttle and a HST transmission, I must admit my preference to HST. I now have about 150 hours on my new L3830 and have run it with my 7 foot boxscraper with the rippers down in low gear and front bucket loaded for more traction for many hours on end under extremely hard pulling conditions and am amazed at how COOL the whole tractor remains. I think Kubota got this stuff figured out pretty well. I still think the Kubota HST as second to none. While my manual transmissions are surely great transmissions, it's my little HST tractor that I prefer most. I cannot imagine what practical thing I could throw at it to make this transmission get too hot. Rat...

Re: Guys on Buying forum are freakin\' me out @ HST.

I had a JD 4600 gear and now have a 4610 HST. I do the exact same things I did with the 4600 as I do with the 4610. As far as the HST temp, I haven't a clue but the engine temp gages run identical.

Re: Guys on Buying forum are freakin\' me out @ HST.

I don't know if it was on the thread or the other one, but the point is that when you stop or slow to turn or you stop to clean the radiator, you are in a cooling cycle. This is enough of a cooling cycle to protect the hydro. Then it is not continuous duty, it is broken by short cooling cycles.

The original cab tractor!

Saw one of those on an antique tractor program on RFD-TV channel (great addition in our Direct-TV package!) recently. Probably seemed like a good idea at the time, particularly up in the prairie states, but I would have worn the hinges off the doors getting on and off!
