Sorry for your loss.
I've been there my self and feel your pain.
I'm ashamed to admit it, but I think losing my buddy Luke was harder to get over than losing my dad in some ways.
My condolences

I'm still not over mine and its been a year. I had an appt to put him down and I was pretty late getting to the vet because I took him for Ice Cream and we parked and stared at each other. Dogs are definitely fantastic animals and love you unconditionally. If humans could only take a lesson from them. One thing of reassurance. You definitely don't want them to suffer and it is a hard decision to know when its time... Take care...............

John

I want to thank everyone for their kind words and concern. It helps just to know that you are not the only person who loves animals. Thanks again for being there.

"A dog is the only thing on earth that will love you more than you love yourself." ...Josh Billings

Hear our humble prayer, O God, for our friends, the animals, especially for animals who are suffering; for any that are hunted or lost or deserted or frightened or hungry; for all that must be put to death. We entreat for them Thy mercy and pity, and for those who deal with them we ask a heart of compassion, gentle hands, and kindly words. Make us to be true friends to animals and so to share the blessings of the merciful.

Albert Schweitzer

The best friend a man has in this world may turn against him and become his enemy. His son or daughter that he has reared with loving care may prove ungrateful. Those who are nearest and dearest to us, those whom we trust with our happiness and our good name, may become traitors to their faith. The money that a man has, he may lose. It flies away from him, perhaps when he needs it most. A man's reputation may be sacrificed in a moment of ill-considered action. The people who are prone to fall on their knees to do us honor when success is with us may be the first to throw the stone of malice when failure settles its' clouds upon our heads.

The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous, is his dog. A man's dog stands by him in prosperity and poverty, in health and sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground, when the wintry winds blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only he may be near his master's side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer; he will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounter with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master, as if he were a prince. When all other friends desert, he remains. When riches take wings and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its' journey through the heavens.

If fortune drives the master forth an outcast in the world, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of accompanying him to guard against danger to fight his enemies; and when the last scene of all comes, and death takes the master in its' embrace, and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there by the graveside will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws, his eyes sad, but open in watchfulness, faithful and true even in death.

Wizard's Note:

I have had the above piece for years, but never knew the exact origin of it until recently. It is attributed to Senator George Graham Vest during the 1870 Burden v. Hornsby court case in Warrensburg, Missouri. Sen. Vest's oratory (Above is only a portion of Sen. Vest's speech; the latter half of it has been lost to history.) won the case of Charles Burden, whose favorite dog, Old Drum, had wandered onto the property of Burden's neighbor, Leonidas Hornsby. Hornsby made good his promise to shoot the first dog that wandered onto his property; that dog being Old Drum. He did this even though he had previously hunted with the dog and acknowledged him as one of the best hunters he'd ever seen.

Burden sued Hornsby for damages. Following several appeals, the case reached the Supreme Court of the State of Missouri. Burden received an award of $50.00 in damages for the loss of his canine. The Warrensburg Chamber of Commerce and dog-lovers around the country had erected a statue of Old Drum on the lawn of the Johnson County Courthouse lawn in Warrensburg on September 23, 1958. It is said that this speech provided the origin of the phrase, "A man's best friend is his dog."

If you can... (anonymous)

... start each day without caffeine, ready to greet the world,
... get going without pep pills,
... always be cheerful, ignoring aches & pains,
... resist complaining & boring people with your troubles,
... eat the same food everyday & be grateful for it,
... understand when your loved ones are too busy to give you any time,
... overlook it when those you love take it out on you when through no fault of yours, something is wrong,
... take criticism & blame without resentment,
... ignore a friend's limited education & never correct him,
... resist treating a rich friend better than a poor friend,
... face the world without lies & deceit,
... conquer tension without medical help,
... relax without liquor,
... sleep without the aid of drugs,
... say that, deep in your heart, you have no prejudice of any kind,
Then, my friend, you are almost as good as your dog!

I also understand your feelings. My cat who i have had for either 18 or 19 years got sick a few weeks ago. I took him to the vet who said he had an infection and gave him something for it. I took him home and he would not eat. I waited a couple of days then took him back to the vet who told me that sometimes when cats get sick and anorexic they have to be made to eat. The vet gave him a shot and when I got him home he took a few bites and then stopped eating again. I thought maybe the problem was the anti biotics that he was taking was making him sick. I waited until the drops were done and he had lost some more weight then when he did not stop eating we went back to the vets. They gave him a shot that to make him hungry and kept him over night. When I got back to pick him up they told me that he had eaten some but threw it back up again and the vet thought he might have cancer. I asked about checking into that for sure and was told that at his age the tests might kill him and even if they didnt the risk of an operation was very high. I thought about it and did not want him to spend his last few days in pain. The vet wanted me to put him to sleep immediately but I took him home to think about my decision. I spent some time just sitting with him in my lap and thinking. I came to the decision that as long as he was not in pain and could move around I would not do anything. He got weaker but if i put him on his bed by the wood stove he would get up and walk around. He could still go to the litter box and If I came into the room where he was and sit on the couch he would come sit by my feet. Finally last friday he was getting week and I was getting ready to go ahead and make the decision I had been avoiding. He was still able to move around and was not in pain but was very week. I put him in his bed in the morning and left to take care of some buisness. When I got home in the afternoon he had moved over by the coffee table where he liked to sit by my feet and was laying under it and had passed away. I went out and dug a nice hole for him near where my doberman was buried (they had been good friends for years and years while the doberman was alive) I put him on his bed and buried him that way. I will miss him a lot. He is the last cat I get to own. When I started dating my wife about 9 years ago she was very alergic to cat hair. I told her that this was his home and that he was not moving. Being a great wife she understood and has put up with all the discomfort that living with the cat has brought ( basically she divided up the house he got the front part of the house and she took the back part of the house.) I promised that when he died there would be no more cats.

An interesting end to this story. I did not want any more animals for a while. The next day after my cat died my son had to get rid of his doberman pupy who is about 7 months old. ( I am a big doberman fan) He asked my ex wife to keep it until he bought his own land and could keep it. His dog and hers got into a fight and I got a phone call asking me if I could take the dog. I have a big back yard with a wood privacy fence so now at least for the next year or two I have a dog.

Sorry for your loss.

I had a dalmatian named Gus. The best friend a guy could ever hope for. He died about 8 years ago, and I still miss him.

Well in a freak incident this morning I lost my second lab in 8 months. It was very unexpected and has crushed my fiancee' and I. We adopted our two from Potomac Lab Rescue. The chocolate lab was a calm, loving girl. She was her daddy's girl too. She would follow me everywhere. Beauty the black lab was a momma's girl. When we adopted them they came from a breeder that overbread them and abused them both. They were both a project and we came to love them as much as someone loves there children. About a little over a year later we found out the chocolate lab had an agressive cancer. My fiancee' being a vet tech and me having a previous lab with cancer decided not to do chemo and just giver her the best quality of life. A month later we had to euthanize her. Well we found a small lump on the black dog about a week ago and decided to get this removed. We played with Beauty throughout the week and her pre-op blood work was great. This morning they operated on her. At first there were no problems. About 9am I received a call from my fiancee that Beauty was having a bleeding problem and it was not looking good. Within 5 minutes she called me back asking me if I wanted them to work her in cardiac arrest. I told her to stop and that as soon as I could get a replacement for my position I would be there. So now I am in disbeleif, upset, mad and a whole rash of other emotions balled into one. It is going to be a rough few weeks without or black pup around. My fiancee' is finishing her shift and will endure her ride home without her best friend/daughter. So I am now home awaiting her arrival. So to all the families out there that have lost there puppy I feel for you and it definately made me feel better to share this story.

Thank you
charlie and Julie
