Charlie, I'm sure many of us, including myself, understand your pain. I don't know of anything that can be said to help; we just hope time will dull the pain, but it'll probably never go completely away.

I have been blessed with two dogs that were great friends and miss both. It is amazing how much we can be loved by and love an animal. Yes a dog can be a great friend that makes you laugh and cry and at same time drive you bonkers with games. But friends we only miss what we love, not the hurt. In typing this I made a mistake that got my attention and don't know the term for it but spell dog in reverse and you will see it, God. I think it could be true he gave us dogs to help us understand how he loves us, it is so similar, even to the point he died for each of us and he is so faithful. kt

My family has had German Shepherds and Shelties for many years. As a result we have had to deal with the deaths of beloved pets many times. The best cure for a broken heart is to get another dog or puppy as soon as possible. You will never forget the one you lost but believe me you will quickly learn to love the new arrival. I decided a long time ago to keep at least 3 Shepherds all the time. If I lose one, the hurt is lessened by the two remaining and they don't mourn as much for the one who's gone. I get a new puppy as soon as possible. The new life will take your mind off your loss quickly.

I agree with you about the multiple dogs. When we euthanized Maddie due to cancer we were more prepared and we had our Black Lab to help us. Now, since it was sudden and we have lost our only baby left it has left a huge gap. Last night and this morning were definately rough. Especially since we let her sleep inbetween us. I guess the pain will eventually dull but the next few days are going to be tougher then I thought. Thank you all for chiming in and offering ecnouraging advice and kind words.

My ex wife took in a stray dog right after we were married. I did not want this dog but I learned to love her. After my wife left she also left behind the dog that she just had to have and I was glad. I had Sage for 16 years all total. I laugh thinking my first marriage lasted 6 years and I have only been married 8 years this time so that makes Sage the most loyal female in my life. I posted on here about how the vet jerked us around on putting her down and so when she started to cry out in pain in the night I felt I could not wait until morning on the vet. I ended up shooting her myself and how I felt so bad about doing it. I think about her all the time and no dog will ever take her place. I can say though that after 2 and half years I was ready for a new dog and so this past January we rescued a golden retriever from the pound. He is no Sage but on the other hand Sage is no Red (our new dog). He is a very good dog and I am so lucky to have a new friend like him and so I hope you are able to move on in time and get a new friend as I did. I do feel for you and anyone who has been through losing a pet.
