another quick question - I was a Lowes today looking at replacements.. I see the 'american standards' have a 5 yr warranty (and I quote "inside and out").. What are my chances of the warranty covering this??

I was very surprised that they even had a warranty, but except for the floats/flusher ect Im not sure what "inside and out" means..

any ideas

Brian -- unless the crack is clearly caused by overtightening or a smack with a heavy object and the toilet is less than five years old it should be covered -- the issue will probably be proving it but it is always worth a try. I nside and out usually menas the mechanisms and finish etc

I read the American Standard warranty online.. it appears that you must have a receipt AND register the product online to get the warranty.. The plumber that our builder used was let go (never to be used again) after our house due to difficulties in getting him to finish the job (we also didnt know any better and bought our own faucets - which is NOT what is acceptable around here and PO's him terribly..)

I found out where he probably bought the commodes, so I am going to call and see what I can find out.. I NEVER thought about registering commodes for warranty OR even keeping the receipts..

thanks for all the advise

Around here, everyone buys thier own faucets. Actually, you buy pretty much everything that will be seen, and the plumber supplies all the parts that are hidden or connect.

How else do you end up with exactly what you want? And from the plumbers perspective, he doesn't have to chase after the model/design you want, and can't be blamed for installing the wrong model. Its win/win right?

Brian, when I built my house, I chose American Standard commodes, kitchen sink, and a pedestal sink in the master bath. My color choice was antique white and purchased through Lowes. When my order was received at the store, there was lots of damage to the boxes. I started to open the boxes in the store to do an inspection and they seemed to get upset. I should have just walked away, but I had paid for the shipment and didn't want to go through the hassle of reordering somewhere else. I told the manager to write "damaged boxes at delivery" on the receipt, sign it, and I would take the goods. He promised me that they would make anything good if I found damage.

When I opened the boxes and did an inspection, I found one commode tank lid was broken. Everything else was fine. I went back to the store with the lid in hand and my receipt with the note. The manager didn't even blink. He said they would reorder the part for me and took all the information. I was happy.

Well, to make a long story short, it took almost 6 months to get a replacement. It seems that nobody had that tank lid in stock, not even American Standard. Over the 6 months, they had 3 shipments to that Lowes store that included lids. Lowes would call me and I'd go to the store only to find they had sent the wrong color or there was no lid at all. I was really angry and demanded my money back. The manager apologized and asked for one more try to get the part. He ordered a complete toilet in the correct color. One month later it arrived and he gave me the lid. He put my damaged lid in the box and shipped it back to Amer. Std. as damaged goods. :D

I have not been back into that Lowes store nor bought American Standard since. On the bright side, all my Am. Std. fixtures work perfectly. I hope you have better luck with them on your warranty order.:)

Jim, I'm with you. My house has a fancy American Standard F20 Clear Tap faucet on the kitchen sink. I've had to do some repairs to it twice and finally found a place to get parts. But I called American Standard with a couple of questions and the lady didn't waste any time telling me that they only help if it's a product that's under warranty. Otherwise, she wasn't going to answer any questions. And I'm not likely to be buying any American Standard products in the future.

bird, that just strengthens my opinion that customer service is a thing of the past. i work in the service/repair industry and have found the no name fixture work and look just as nice as the name brand and are actually easier to get parts for.

If you play with toilets or other plumbing.. a little water is going to be spilt no matter what.. :).. that a non issue IMHO...
