I have carried my disabled neighbor to the grocery, let him out, and parked HIS TRUCK in a handicapped spot and walked into the store to sit on a bench and wait for him. Then I help him get his stuff out of the little electric buggy and carry it to HIS truck. So I guess people could gripe at me as I (slowly) skip across the parking lot and into the store. BUT I have sat too many times and watched people who have no disabilities leave and return to vehicles.
Which brings another thought to mind. Maybe I should start another thread about the fatties driving the handicapped battery powered buggies around in stores. At our local Wally World they, the fatties, drive VERY, VERY aggressively. An elderly person or an obviously handicapped person, like my neighbor, seem to be careful how they drive around other people. The fatties do not. My wife has been driven into, the guy backed up and started toward her again while staring at her. She drew back her purse to swing at him and he stopped and sat there staring until she limped out of the way. She had a bruise on her leg from the blow. We have seen others push carts out of the way with their scooters. Hate to stereotype here but they are always the five hundred pounders that do this.
I HAD to use one for a few weeks after my knee replacement. And I must say that Sam's Club has the best. Those things will fly. They are much better than any other store's. But for some reason the people on them at Sam's and the big box stores seem more careful and polite. Certain groups at the local Wal-Mart not so much.
