I'm going to start hanging drywall in my pole building and have a question on how to screw it down. The gable side has poles 10' OC and the truss side poles are 8' OC. I have framed up between the poles 2' OC.

Since the building has a fair amount of flex whats the best way to hang it and screw it down?

Best build the frames the drywall is hanging onto in units that do the floating so the drywall doesn't have to move on the screws.

i.e. make the frames solid for the drywall, and then figure a way to float those frames. Drywall won't last long with movement of the underlying studs, IMO.

Sounds like to me you are asking for cracks in the finished drywall. What do you want to know about hanging and screwing?

We start with the ceiling. When that's done, start on the top of the walls. We hang so that the 4' side is vertical and the long (8, 10, 12, whatever) side is horizontal. Screw in with standard drywall screws. I think we put 6 screws on each stud.

Hanging the ceiling first will allow you to shove the wall pieces up against the ceiling pieces and help to hold the corners together. Hanging the wall drywall 'on edge' will keep the long sides spanning studs, which will reduce cracking at the joints.

When hanging around doors, windows, etc., cut a piece to fit around. Don't try to splice 2 pieces at a window or door. It may be easier and quicker, but will be more likely to crack at that joint.

Did that help?

Dooley said it better than I could. Sounds like he knows what he's talking about!!

Have you already bought the sheetrock? Since you have 24 inch centers, it has to be 5/8 or thicker. Otherwise it will flex on your real bad.

Speaking of flex, are you set on sheetrock?

I'd use panneling, plywood, chipboard or just about anything else besides sheetrock on a pole barn.

I'm with Eddie, OSB will hang a lot of tools to boot. That's what pole barns are for!

Eddie, do you think the wood will make it too dark inside the building? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif Or should he just paint the wood prior to installing it? And of course he would really need a lot of good primer as it will really soak into the wood. I wonder if some type of aluminum or vinyl siding might work better for the ceiling and wood for the walls.

Stan,
Use the primer that is used for sheet rock prior to painting the final coat. PVA (poly vinyl acetate) works well for sealing OSB. I would paint prior to hanging in my case because my pole barn is already loaded with "stuff"!. IMO

I don't consider our pole barn dark inside without painted walls, what do you think?

Pineridge's pic shows real good how OSB looks on the wall.

I left mine just like he did and have plenty of light. In fact, if you install the OSB with the shiny side facing in, I think it adds light to the space. The other, rougher side would probalby absorb light, but that's just a guess.

My current workshop is the first time I've done all the walls in OSB. It's also the best shop I've ever built and having the OSB has made it very easy to hang stuff from, organize and work in there. For me, I would never put anything else on the walls.

For example...using a 10' sheet on the gable side where the poles are 10' OC. I was wondering about screwing down the short side on the poles. Or the lack of screwing the pole seams so they float.
