Hanging drywall in a pole building

CTyler,

My building is the same as yours 8' on the back wall and 10' on the gable ends. I screwed and glued it, mine has been up for about 6 months, in some pretty high wind conditions and no cracks to speak of.
Good Luck!

I'm not set on sheetrock but its inexpensive and can hang and finish it.

One side(50') of the shop covered with OSB. This was to finish the shop side of the 50x16 finished area. After doing that I started feeling uneasy about fire safety.

Thats good to hear cause there is a flip side to this whole flex issue. The pole building has a fair amount fo flex compared to a house. However once you frame up the inside then screw and glue drywall its much much stiffer. Thats the reason I throw this stuff out there cause my initial thought was screw and glue it. Of course then I have over analyze the dam thing and start second guessing myself. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Paralyzation by analyzation seems applicable to me more often than not. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Fire retardant paint is available. If you plan on welding in an area that has an OSB wall, there are ways to protect the area. A metal base board to stop sparks from getting under the wall. Fire retardant sheet rock in that area.
I do not know what the flame resistance of OSB is but I am sure that it has some because of the safety regulations that are in place for everything we buy.
If you are still nervous about fire safety, an overhead sprinkler system can be installed.
Eddie has convinced me to use all OSB. I was going to use OSB around the first 4 feet of the wall and the upper portion with sheet rock. It is going to cost more money but so will keeping up with the sheet rock cracks and having to put plywood or OSB up in the areas where I want to hang tools and shelves.
Good luck.

lots of churches built with pole barn methods, cant be much of an issue with drywall inside.

I don't consider our pole barn dark inside without painted walls, what do you think?

Eddie, by your photo it looks pretty bright in there. What product is on your ceiling?

Stanley,

That wasn't my wall unless your talking about my thread about my workshop project. Here's a picture of what it looks like in my shop.

I have 12 foot walls and I put the OSB in on it's side.

As you can see, there's nothing on the ceiling except 4 eight foot flourecent lights. I have lots of light!!

Here's the other side.

I used it to support my shelves and hang stuff from.

My brother is a drywall hanger by trade (actually BOTH of them are and have been over 80 years combined now) anyhow we hung drywall in my old boss's shop and it brightened it up great. no cracks some 6 years later. the barns (50 x 100 X two ofthese end to end and one hole side is lean too and covered as well 20+ feet. the heights are 18' to bottom of trusses and peaks are coated between buildings (one was built then 2nd one added no 3~4 years later)

there USED to be a bad condensation issue prior to the drywall so we werent really sure about it but it was much cheaper than the OSB back then lately drywall board is almost doubbled in cost. that said it is not as hardyt as OSB anbd this particular shop is a welding shop and has doubbled OSB up 4' and trippled up 2 feet. the drywall only goes down to the 24; section OVER the first layer of OSB. standard pole barn framing with standard insulation under the drywall is all. the condensation issues dissappeared after hanging it as it sealed up a lot of the infilteration. what is going on behind the walls? no ideas... abtgiw the stuff hasn't failed or gotten SOFT and has really made a big differeance the shop is primarly a welding / fabrication shop. the echo of grinding/ hammering noises went up a lot too...
the celings were not covered, only the vertical walls.
