I need some info on a 48" hanson 3 point snow blower is anyone familiar with this company? I have only found a thread or two talking about the blowers they made for pickup trucks, and that they were underpowered. the one I found is a 3 point so I would think it would be a different story since it would be pto and not a separate underpowered motor. I have not owned a 3 point blower before, so I could use some advise from some of you with experience with them.
I use my FEL all winter so 3 point is the only blower I can use.

If you could post some pictures that would be great.

The things you need/must have for the use of a three point hitch mounted snow blower are power, traction and adhesion, you need all three to work well.
You need either ladder link snow chains or v bar snow and ice chains and keeping the mule at PTO engine speed and traveling slowly in reverse on the first pass and then you can take half cuts on the next passes.
Lining the chute and spout with slick plastic from horn plastics using the sheet anchor bolts from Farm Tek will help you a lot if you use them.
Another option is using fluid film and Clarence's impeller kit to improve the snow blowers performance by 50 percent or more.

From the images I find on line for the Hanson product I would stay away.

leonz will probably disagree with me but, in my many years around and designing machinery as a mechanical engineer, the design with the gearbox in the middle of the auger is not the heavy duty product you need but rather a walk behind design.

Here is a photo of a center gearbox where the owner used too strong a shear bolt not realizing how weak it was.

There are tough old snow blowers around like this one which were made to last and can easily be cleaned up because the gearbox is behind the fan and made like the serious blowers used by many farmers.

Hello Dave7040,

NOPE I do not disagree with you at all my friend not at all. The worm gear and spur gear system is best left to lthe walk behinds.

I keep hoping my JDLA115 and the snow blower it came with get stolen as I would rather have a 2017 yamaha 1028 track drive snowblower anyway if I can swing it.

leonz you say I need chains, I plow with a 3 point grader blade without chains, I would think that would be when I need it more.

(if you can bring your mule to run the blower before buying it as a no load test high RPM test will reveal any issues)

If you buy the Hanson it will act like a boat anchor if it does not have substantial skis or skid feet and that is why you need chains and loaded tires.

Start with a few photos of what you want to buy here so we can look them over.
Rust is not an issue if the blower case is a thick steel and not sheet metal

I would find the two shear bolt locations, one on the pto shaft and the other on the sprocket that drives the auger, and look first for grade of bolt used, and second, if the bolt is a grade 8 (the one with many lines on the bolt head) I would remove the bolt(s) and for elongated or deformed holes which would indicate frequent impact with solid objects which will be bad for any gearbox.

Remove the pto shaft from the blower and then go and turn the fan by hand to see if it rotates smoothly and without any wobble. Watch the auger as you do this. Some slight bending in the auger itself is acceptable.

Last, bring something like a pipe cleaner. It is something with a fuzzy exterior and bendable so you can insert into gear box upper hole and see the condition of the oil and its level. Dirty oil of any presence of water is not good.
