Those nail magnet sweepers on wheels are great. I borrowed one and found an unbelievable quantity of junk in front of my 90 year old barn. Cabinet hinges, latches, small parts, wire fragments, in addition to the expected nails and screws. Obviously a lot of stuff was dismantled or repaired right there, over the years.
A few years back HF had the wand scanners used for airport security at a reasonable price. That is excellent for surveying used lumber before sawing it. I also use it if I drop something in the gravel/grass. Find the object listening for the buzzer, then 'blot' the area with a wide Recovery Magnet to pick it up if I can't see what triggered the buzzer. Sure beats combing through grass on my knees looking for an escaped spring etc.
