Harbor Freight Tools that don't suck

It isn't just the labor cost;
it is also the energy cost and the excess burdensome government regulations.
OSHA and IMSHA and the EPA have hamstrung manufacturing in the US.
Some safety and regulations are needed but we have gone so far overboard it is ridiculous.
And someone was doing his best to reverse the trend.

I have hope that manufacturing will return strong someday when international labor/shipping costs start evening out a bit. Maybe some will also wake up to the fact that we over leveraged our dependence on other countries to produce so many products that we take for granted. Not good to be so dependent in a volatile world. People need to understand how fast things can change and put us in a world of hurt if SHTF.

Perhaps a big part of the problem in our country is that there are way too many people earning way too much money for actually doing nothing (i.e. stockholders who demand a high rate of return). And the ones who earn the most money are the ones responsible for moving their own worker's jobs overseas (i.e. CEO's, Boards of Directors, who would sell out their country's best interests to satisfy the greed of their stockholders). It appears to me that is the healthy stock market measure of success is what the "someone" mentioned above was most interested in.

Maybe I don't understand what you're saying. How is it a stockholder is someone who earns too much money for doing nothing? Didn't that stockholder earn some money somewhere and decide to invest it in that particular company so it could expand and hopefully return a gain to him? I take it you have no money what so ever in anything but a tin can in your back yard? Keep saving, get a big can, or your later days will be wanting and hoping someone can help you!

There is nothing the matter with the concept of stockholders, or a stock holder making money on their investment. It is what originally built this country's vast economy. But several decades ago the focus of many major companies started shifting to solely making the stockholder as much money as possible, and away from things like providing employment for their workers, maintaining and upgrading their facilities, providing a quality product or service and adding to the general well being of their local community. That shift in focus is why most of our manufacturing has went overseas. That is the exact metamorphism I have seen from my first hand involvement and observations of American industry over the course of my career. There is far more to purpose of industry than just maximizing profits for investors.
By the way, most of the biggest investors who have the power to dictate strategy didn't earn their money by working in the factory, they more likely inherited it from their Dad.
And you make assumptions about my financial strategies that not very accurate.

First of all, I'm one of the very few who have lived on both sides of the track. I worked the line, 340 days in a row once, and I've sat at the $75,000.00 conference table in Verizon's corp headquarters. I've cleaned more grease traps than most of you know exist and i've eaten in a restaurant in Vienna that i assure you, none of us are gettin in without an invite!

No one has said 1 word about american govt education. We have the worst education in the first world. Start with that fact and, with out immigrants, see how far you get.

I've said it before, when a over paid, under worked govt. job or disability is the goal of the workforce, we are in big trouble.

Our population is......generally speaking........lacking......

Just finished Brave New World yesterday. The only thing he and Orwell got wrong was the govt. oppression. It does exist but that comes from incompetence and apathway. The real effect comes from big business exploiting our less than virtuous characteristics. Just watch a few commercials people.

Think of Apple. People worship apple and they are the definition of send it to china. USAUSAUSA

I'm thinking we are gonna get just what we deserve but, i'm probably not gonna be around so, who cares!

Maybe some of the reason is that other's are like me....and find it difficult to understand what you are talking about.
What is a gov't education? As opposed to what?? Self education? Private education?

Our educational system does seem to be unable to decide whether it should be science based or opinion based. But when I look at the education of our whole country it does appear to be balanced between the two.

I'm going to reply to your comments, with all due respect.

First, tell me 1 thing the govt does well.

Govt education is what people call public education. Again, the worst in the first world. It's broke. That horse left the barn 50 years ago. How many senators send their kids to govt schools? I've been all over the world, a 16 old Italian kid knows more american history than virtually any american i know. What do they say about doing the same thing and expecting different results?

As far as immigrants go. After about 1 month, i told most my subs, Id prefer their latino crews. Seems many of the white guys show up drunk, hung over, cranked up on meth, pissed off and/or lazy. Not all, please, but too many! The latinos that work here are generally on time, work hard, seem happy, don't whine and the workmanship is excellent, imho. They come here to do the jobs that your and my kids won't do. Their children are often well well educated and they seem to appreciate the opportunities our country offers. 2 of my subs told me without immigrants they would be outta business. On the other end there is a special immigration exemption for certain skills. What they mean is someone with an education. I worked in hi hi hi tech and the majority of the real doers were immigrants on those special visas. A Friend teaches nothing but post grad IT stuff. He hates it but says 99% of the students in his classes are immigrants.

I'm real close to being an immigrant, my grandfather worked on the Titanic and I was raised in a scotch irish household. What i see is after the first few generations, we all become Americans.

IMHO I think in too many cases, we are lacking the old american mid west work ethic. Way too many people trying to get over. That happens everywhere, it's just we are so rich we get away with it more than others. Hard to quantify and certainly not universal. Ask the kid growing up on the south side of chicago how it's working for him. As far as better than most, just a feeling but, in many of the places i've been, people don't seem as hateful as here.

As far as apple, i despise them on 3 levels. 1, my ipod broke 20 years ago and they treated me like poop. 2 I have friends in the business who do business with them, bunch of good stories there. I was in the send it to china business, apple is right at the top of that list. 3. They have boo koo bucks sitting off shore to avoid taxes. I don't blame them, i blame the govt. That doesn't mean I have to like it! Oh yea, 4, their cloud. My i phone and i pad are inches from each other and both bluetooth capable but for them to share contacts etc, you gotta run it thru the cloud. Big brother is watching.

As far as China goes, most everybody objects to someone. Of course it's not the people, it's the culture. Oh yea, and that virus thing that they knowing spread all over the world. Again, i don't blame china for taking advantage but i don't have to like it.

As far as caring, i care too much. The old saying about changing what you can and not worrying about what you can't seems to apply.

Interesting, 2 people can look at the same picture and see 2 different things. In the end it's just talk.

This thread has sorted drifted away from Harbor Freight, but the discussion is related. You make good points Frankenkubota. It reminds me of a conversation I had with an old electrician in Arizona who was helping me get my brother's house ready for sale. The guy was a lifelong Arizona resident. This was just before the 2016 election. He said. "****, we don't need no wall between us and Mexico! Mexicans are the only ones around here who will do any **** work. What we need is a wall between us and California to keep those **** rich Silicon Valley bastards out who keep causing the prices of everything to go up." I thought that was really funny, but had a hint of truism.

More than a hint I'd say.
