Up in the morning and looking outside you see it's gonna be a hot/bright sunny day...You've got a lot of field to work...What hat are you gonna wear to help keep the sun out? Cowboy? Ball cap? Other? (Canopies don't count):D

Got to much sun when I was growing up. At 35 was diagnosed with malignant melanoma. Had a 5 inch section of skin removed from my arm followed by a year of Interferon injections. Now I wear long sleeve shirts, gloves, and a sun hat with at least a 4" brim.

Everyone should listen to dirt ditch. I would also add using a sweat/water resistant sunscreen with a SPF of 45. Jay

Wide brim hats for sure. Aussie "Barmah" or Cowboy or straw hats. Ball caps are too hot and don't cover the neck.

I wear a ball cap most of the time.. But when I'm mowing I wear a John Deere straw hat. :D

Perfect timing on this one...my daughter just got back from Australia and brought me a "Man from Snowy River" Aussie style cowboy hat.

I love it! She told me I have to wear it whenever I "tractor".

Straw cowboy hat for me when riding the tractor for long periods like mowing. However, if I'll be on and off the tractor alot or working in tight quarters, like doing tree work, I wear a ball cap because it doesn't interfere with the work as much. I always wind up knocking off the cowboy hat when working in the trees.

Years ago on a Caribbean cruise I bought a really cool looking wide brim hat made from banana leaves. It was green at the time but is straw colored now. It didn't have any kind of sweat band so I cut a wash rag and glued it in and works great now. When I feel I need protection from falling limbs I wear a wide brimmed safety hat from Alabama Power Co. I found near my house where someone had had a car wreck and the area in the woods was strewn with the contents of the car. I find that the top of my ears need the most protection as in years past they have actually been scared from the damage. In the winter i'll go with a ball cap or toboggan with a hood like the fire department uses around here. I guess it's fire retardant but mainly its warm and you have freedom of movement unlike the kind of hood on a coat or hunting coveralls.

In cool weather with bright sun just a ball cap. In hot weather I wear a fishing hat. It has a little bit longer than normal bill, cloth across the top with mess side, and a curtain across back hanging down to cover the neck. It's the best I've found so far. Better than straw and wide brim hats.

I still just go with a ball cap. I use sunscreen to keep from burning and by the end of the summer my neck is pretty brown. The big problem with skin cancer is when you burn, not just with exposure.

I tend to wear an old "boonie" if I know I'll be working in the sun, and a baseball cap if I'll be working mostly under the trees.

In my JD-3520-Cab with the AC going, its generally one of my John Deere ball caps as I use a big set of earmuff headphones for my MP-3 music, . . but all the rest of the time its a Cowboy hat for me. Light one for summer, heavy one for the winter and of course a "good" one for "dress,..or Honky-tonkin" nights! BUT, I'm never without a hat of some sort.

Another thing: for guys with high foreheads, we tend to sweat a lot. Like "Woodchuckie" above, I cut a face cloth in half and sewed it in front to soak up the sweat as that "terrycloth" material is great for that!!

That's what I often used but lately I've been wearing a "Breezer". Solid brim, open mesh sides and solid crown. Works pretty well but since it's only something started lately, it may be too late to gain any beneficial effects. Also started using sunscreen lately and that's something I've never done in my life before.

Most of the time I wear one of these bucket hats in XL as Large is more of a Medium in my book.

Cabela's Washed Bucket Hat

If it's real hot, and I'm not under canopy cover while outside, then I wear one of these.

I wear my hardhat when using the gas trimmer and I have one of these in it for hot days.

And I have a welder's beanie for when I'm crawling around under a vehicle to help keep crud out of what's left of my hair. The beanie fabric is too slick and my welder's helmet doesn't stay put because of it.
