Hats

I just want to make everybody aware off another problem from the sun. I go back to the VA today for a Freckle in my eye. Two day search they say the freckle may be melanoma.

Straw hat for me. Bought two of them a few months ago. Used to always be just a baseball cap but ears always got burned.

I guess mine is called a breezer. It has a solid top, mesh sides and a solid wide brim. I wear it on the tractor and whenever in the boat.

Up in the morning and looking outside you see it's gonna be a hot/bright sunny day...You've got a lot of field to work...What hat are you gonna wear to help keep the sun out? Cowboy? Ball cap? Other? (Canopies don't count):D

Don

Ball cap or Aussie bush hat.

If I'm going to be out in the field tractorin' for more than a little while, a bandana or towel around the back of the neck.

And most important, a good pair of wrap around shades to delay the onset of eye cataracts.

I've always just worn a ball cap, but after reading this thread, I think I will go hat shopping. Thanks a lot guys. One more expense.:D

Here's what I usually wear:
Columbia Performance Fishing Gear Omni-Shade

It's lightweight, has a sweatband on the inside, and it keeps the sun off my ears and neck.

I also got too much sun in my youth and had a couple of small skin cancer spots diagnosed and removed when I was in my thirties.

For me it's a wide brim hat, specifically a Tilley model T4. It goes everywhere I go.

I also have a couple of the white long sleeve shirt/jacket things with a high SPF rating. I prefer a mechanical sun protection solution over the chemical sun screens that you put on your skin.

I wear a ball cap with a bandanna hanging out the back covering my neck and ears

Every year I go to the dermatologist to have sun damage burned off before it becomes cancerous. I had numerous blistering sunburns as a kid. In a way, maybe I was lucky because those early experiences taught me to avoid the sun as much as possible. But, when there's work to be done, how much can you avoid it?
Never liked the greasiness of sunscreens, but recently started wearing a hat when I'll be exposed for long periods..
The hat of choice is currently a "boonie", but the Tilleys look good and have a nice wide brim.

I never leave the house without my camo John Deere baseball cap. But, every now and then I wear a nice $70 Resistol to go out or mow in.

I have been known to wear my camo out to a couple $500+ dinners and not remove it.

You know that sure is interesting, ive wore the same johndeere camo hat for 5 years now and never tried a different one. It is usually brown and green until I wash it and notice it has some lighter greens to.

I wear my hardhat when using the gas trimmer and I have one of these in it for hot days.

Do you soak that pad in water or does it just absorb sweat?

You soak the Mira-cool pads, hats, etc in cold water for about 1/2 an hour before using them. Give them a quick squeeze to get the excess water out and your good to go. How long between recharging them with water depends on how hot it is, how breezy it is, etc. You won't get an ice-cream headache from them; but I've found them helpful in high temps.

I usually wear a ball cap. I'm glad some have posted links, because this thread is useless without pics!

For some reason, some in my family are really sensitive about appearing to be <ahem> rural, which to me is weapons-grade stupid. My brother-in-law gave me a cap with the mesh in the back and my wife says I'm too young (at 53?!) to wear it - and a straw hat or cowboy hat would probably cause a general revolution.

I try to tell them it's about function, not appearance - I mean really, who am I trying to impress, the neighbors all know me... but it doesn't go very far! My one neighbor wears a bucket hat...

I have a hat similar to the one Ralphie wears in the that Christmas movie, ear flaps and what not, that I wear when I'm cutting trees down or splitting wood, etc, in the winter. I caught all kinds of static for that one!
