hatz diesel engine question

i recently picked up a german made hatz single cylinder air cooled diesel engine. model E79. it came with a parts book, but no users manual. this engine has a xtra-fuel button, that you pull up or push down. not sure what this is, or when to engage it. all the other diesels i have dont have this function.. anybody know about this??? thanks..

I'm just guessing as I have no experience on Hatz diesels but on an old International backhoe I have, (that has no glow plugs) I pull the stop cable half-way out to give the engine more fuel for cold starting, mabye the Hatz uses something like this.

You use the pull up plunger when cold starting. Set the throttle at about 1/4 to 1/3 and pull up the cold start plunger, Does your engine have manual or elec. start ? First You need to turn the compression release knob (located near the top by the rocker box) until its level with the top of the engine. This allows the cold start plunger to stay in the out position and the compression to stay released for several rpm until the flywheel gains enough speed to fire the engine. Then pull the plunger up & crank her up. I had several hatz similar to yours on small double drum vibratory asphalt rollers. (walk behind type).....................Tom

thanks gatractorman and tom. i thought it was something to do with cold starting, but didnt know how to properly engage it. now i know, i didnt want to break anything. this engine is a hand crank start, had it running a few times, did the dial comp. release thing and this bugger starts every time. dont know if i will ever need to pull the button, i keep it inside. but maybe if its out in the winter weather for a bit , i will need to try that procedure. seems like a well built engine, weighs a ton too.. thanks again guys.
