Hauling a backhoe on a dump truck

There's nothing inherrently wrong with trying to haul it on a single axle truck, but not a dump truck. You need a long wheelbase 26K GVW truck with a long platform or stake body. Problem with dump truck (1) usually higher than a straight body, (2) short wheelbase and doesn't have much body overhang if you want to back into an embankment to load/unload. (3) a flat body can be modified to a dovetail for easier loading.
If you go with a truck it can work but you'll need a dock or embankment for loading or dovetail with ramps (unless you enjoyed that video:laughing:).

Could a 16K trailer behind a 10K truck handle this?

We have a F 700 dump with a 12' Monroe box. It had a 12,300# empty weight. It's a 391 gas motor. My neighbors brother has a 77 Case 560 Contraction King. No way it's going in the bed.

By the way our F 700 dumps bed is 5 feet plus from the ground. I just loaded it yesterday with fire wood. And the 560 will not go into my pole barn with 12' door. No cab on it either.

I can pull it easily behind my F350 though and he pulls it behind a 2500 Dmax.

Check your measurements. I can't see it fitting due to dipper height or overall width.

Chris

I fully agree with hauling your backhoe with a one ton dually truck and a gooseneck trailer. Is this something you would be interested in Rawbert?

Have you looked around for an ex rental truck? Uhaul, Hertz, or Ryder? Pull the box and sell it and make a bed for it. You may even find one with low profile tires. I would check into insurance as it could be a deal breaker.

When I was a kid it was common to hook the FEL over the dump truck's tailgate then lift the backhoe's front wheels off of the ground and tow it like a trailer. It would probably get you a close relationship with the swat team today. Come to think of it, probably not good 50 years ago.

There is a guy down the road from me that does that with his late 80s f 350 dump truck pulling a 580 case

I imagine turning or stopping could be exciting.

That said, a fencing contractor we used to know in NC flat towed his 3600 Ford tractor behind a full-size pickup. He had built a heavy duty fold down tow hitch on the front (similar design to that you'd see on a jeep.) When towing he'd use the flashers on the tractor, keep it at about 25mph and leave the tractor running to lube the transmission while in neutral. It seemed to work fine for him, he only went maybe 10-12mi at most. I don't think there were any legal issues, he'd been doing it for many years.

Might be something to look into, I would think any class 6 truck could safely flat tow a 10,000lb TLB if it were legal.

I would strongly suggest getting an accurate weight on the hoe. 10,000 sounds light.

Weather you have you cdl or not you will either need farm insurance or commercial insurance for a truck like you are looking at. For under 200 for cdl just get the correct lic and be legal.
Then get the right equipment to do the job safely.

These dovetail trucks are popular in Cali for hauling backhoes and skip loaders.
Backhoe Dovetail.jpg

I looked at one here locally for hauling my ctl and tractor, but it had a CAT3206 in it and it was pretty much worn out. The one I looked at was an ex-flatbed tow truck. The guy sold the aluminum bed and used the cash to pay a local weld shop to build a nice dovetail bed for it. If you could find a suitable truck and a cheap enough dovetail gooseneck trailer, you could use the trailer bed on the truck and sell the axles to make up some costs. Just an idea.

I assume these are popular in CA so as not to need a trailer and CDL. Probably lower cost vehicle licensing too.

It's not always so simple as paying the fees, taking the tests and getting a license. In states like WA and probably CA they will run you through the CDL wringer if you or one of your employees ever failed a drug test in the past, even if it was a a pre-employment test. Same thing with a DUI conviction in a personal automobile; even treatment for hypertension. This stuff can haunt you for 5 years or more and involve considerable expense, lawyers, training classes, re-testing, etc. I'm not implying the OP is in any of these situations but some persons who want/need to drive commercial vehicles may be, hence the need to utilize a suitable non-CDL vehicle.

With the loosening of marijuana laws in several jurisdictions these problems are going to become more prevalent; in rare cases tests have been failed because of heavy second-hand smoke.
