Can anyone give some some good advice as far as binding a tractor down on a flatbed, straps versus chains, location on tractor etc? The last thing I want to do is loose a 5000 lb tractor. I used to haul a 580b Case TLB on a tigerline, all I would do is use a chain binder run thru the frame and one around the backhoe, even though I was younger and dumber then, it still didn't feel safe.

Here in California the local CHP made us use a one chain and one binder at each corner of the machine and a chain over the bucket or blade to keep it from boucing. The chain must be of certain size also, depending on the size or weight of the machine . I use 3/8 inch .

I have used straps and chains. I prefer chains on my Kubota. I tried straps, but there are so many angular edges that can chafe the straps, that I switched back to chains. Junkman mentioned an idea though, that would work with chains or straps to minimize chaffing. Use old fire hose over the straps at wear points.

For my Farmall, that is painted up, I use straps. But, it has much easier access, and most area's where I want to strap are rounded and smooth.

Either will work. Part of it will come down to your particular tastes.

In our area you have to have 2 chains in the front crisscrossed and 2 in the back the same. They have to be grade 70 chains, binders and hooks.Any of these that are not grade 70 will make the whole system unacceptable to DOT.If you get in a accident your trailer better have your tractor still attached or they will try and most likely charge you with improperly securing your load. This means lose of points, fine and maybe insurance issues. You can get yourself in a lot of trouble real quick by being slack. The cost of a proper setup is not cheap but will last forever and if something happens you might feel a little better. In our area if you haul a trailer over 10,000 lbs you have to have a endorsement on your licence or you are illegal"a fact few in our area even know"until you have a accident. So what I am trying to say is find out what the requirements are in your area and abide by them.
