We run two tractors cutting ... Montana 4340 (43hp) with a Frontier DM 1160 ... Branson 5530 (55 hp) with a Frontier DM 1160 and we have no problems.

We rake with a 10 wheel v-rake and run the Case IH 8430 round baler on the 5530 ... I prefer 4x4 rounds. More bales at more money per bale.

Square bale with the 5530 and the JD 346 wire baler, accumulate with a ten bale accumulator and have a 10 bale grapple ... This year we handled right at 200 acres.

Now that is 2 of us running ... and we are looking at another lease for next year.

your 4105 would be ok to rake an tedd with but honestly thats it.you need a min of 52hp an 45 pto hp to run a 4 by 5 rd baler an 8ft disc mower.but since you have to buy all the equipment id buy something like a 7040 from the start.then you can pull a 4 by 6 baler.now a 95hp will pull a 5 by 6 baler.

The Case IH 8430 is rated for 40 hp and the 8420 is rated 30 hp (per my case IH dealer)

There are also smaller balers that make smaller bales and require less hp.

The Case IH 8430 rd baler rated at 40 pto hp would be like the tail wagging the dog on a 33 pto hp tractor

Yep and for sure I did not recommend that baler for him ... I referenced it because he talked about a 4x5 baler ... I believe the 8430 would work but the bale would even be smaller than a 4x4 ... I think 38" by 48"

If the OP matches the equipment to his HP ... well as I stated earlier it can be done.

Yep.... and with only 1-33hp tractor on 100 acres - he might get that first cutting off the field just about in time to get started on the 2nd cutting!! :D

Gotta have more horses in those fields!

Alright, alright..... I will buy bigger tractor. Geesh....

Simple math -- if every member on TBN sends me just $1 then I should be good. It's the holiday season and everyone is in the giving mood so what's one more dollar :D

I pretty much knew in the back of my mind it probably wouldn't work but I guess that is why you have to ask the question first.

Thanks for all the honest and valuable input

Add bigger tractor to the list of research of mower and baler. Think I will start a new thread to see what everyone's opinion is for perfect combo of tractor and mower and baler if you had it to do all over again..... should be interesting.

There ya go...! It is the holiday season, indeed! Time to start "dreaming and hoping"... ask for what we'd all like to see under the Christmas tree - or parked - in the barn! :dance1:

So I might at well throw my question in here I guess.

I am looking at haying about 20 acres for myself. The tractor I am thinking about doing the haying with is a LS U5020. 42ph at the pto and about 4300lbs.

From what I am seeing I need to ensure I keep my baler smaller, like the Case IH 8430 and choose the right mower?

I know the tractor is on the smaller side for haying but does it seems possible as long as I am not in a hurry? Thanks for the input.

It's possible but "as long as I am not in a hurry?" I never met anyone who was baling hay who wasn't in a hurry.

Are you more interested in round bales or small squares? There are quite a few older square balers that would work real well on your size of tractor - not so many old round balers, though.

And if you've spent much time looking at the prices of round balers vs square balers... at least good shape balers - you already know there's a big difference in how much money you'll spend to choose "Door B".

I looked at the small, Massey Ferguson round balers, too. Matter of fact, there was a like new Massey baler for sale for quite a while in the Fairbanks area. People moving back out of state - asking $14K for the baler - IIRC.

Your tractor will work just fine on most of the smaller bale size equipment. As Steve mentioned; just a little slower is all..
