Have the fever for a new tractor

The 4120 is a heck of a tractor. I have had one for (4) years and have not needed to visit the dealer for anything but oil filters for scheduled changes. Absolutely perfect size for operating a 6 ft bush-hog in any conditions. I would reccommend sticking with the Bush-hog brand in a rotary cutter as they make the neatest cut of any brands I have tried. Save a little money also and stick with the gear trans, and 400X loader. Gear is better for open field mowing as it sounds like is your major task. Save some more by going with R1 tires, unless you need to use it a lot on a lawn. Consider the telescoping lower links if you intend to do much changing of impliments.

Thirty acres of fescue is a lot of hay. If your intent is to cut and bale the fescue for use as animal feed then you need to be looking at as large (PTO Horsepower)of a tractor as the budget will allow.

That is totally relative. You could square bale that, but it would be a LOT of bales.

What kind of yield do you expect?

I've decided on the 4120 with 400X loader and the dealer quoted it with the ehydro transmission. Out the door, delivered and full of fuel price = $25,582. 0% for 48. Got a quote of the MX6 for $2400 and I'm considering that also.

The one thing that concerns me with the 4120 and MX6 combo is the MX6 doesn't cut out the footprint of the tractor. The wheelbase for the 4120 is 92 inches. I'll have roughly 10 inches of run over but uncut grass left on either side of the rear wheels.

One of the restriction I have for the cutter and tractor is cutting between rows of trees based roughly on a 10 to 12 ft grid. Now, while they're still seedlings, the 10 inch strip is a problem. 5 or 6 years from now when the seedlings are young trees with limbs reaching out it'll be time for Roundup on the strip of grass around the trees that is left for by the cutter.

But regardless, this combo is the best I can do for my situation for the money.

I appreciate all of your replies and comments.

You're getting wheelbase confused with width. The MX6 is a good match for the 4x20 series. Wheelbase is the measurement between the footprint of the front tires and the footprint of the back tires. :)

Btw, congrats on the new 4120! Post some when you get it. :D

Wheel base and outside width are both right at 72" for the 4120-4720. I use my 4520 with my MX6 and cut full width without problems unless the tires pack down the grass in soft spots.

MX-6 will cover the tracks of the 4120 unless you are doing something crazy,

Went to the dealer today to setup the financing paperwork and saw a new 4320 with a 400x loader sitting on his lot that had not been there before. Looked at it and it had several features the 4120 I was looking at did not (several that you had recommended): tilt steering wheel, cruise control, telescoping hitch arms, and a "floor" mat. Asked what the difference in the price would be from the 4120 and was pleasantly surprised. All that plus 5 more HP for $1200 more than the price of the 4120. I took it and the MX6. Supposed to be delivered next Tuesday.

John Deere requires insurance when you take the 0% financing (and may with other % also, I'm not sure). Insuring new equipment only makes good sense anyway but I found it pays to shop around. For the life of the contract all the equipment insured through JD was going to be $400 per year with a $500 deductible.

ALFA will insure the same equipment for $200 a year for as long as I own or want to insure it. Same coverage but with a $250 deductible. I have the option to reduce coverage as the equipment ages etc.

New tractor fever cured.

Uncle Wayne,

Enjoy your new tractor, I think you will find that is a great combination for brush cutting.

I just bought a 2720 and put it on my home owners for 70 dollars a year....might want to consider that as an option as well!
