Thanks for correcting me. I was going off a Chrysler brochure which is apparently misleading. My page # is 654. I use a Sway Pro 1500 WDH for any heavy towing as the ride is better- and now legal :)

It's just the numbers game! You and I both know that a Ram 2500 with 1,000 extra pounds of Cummins diesel anchoring that front end to the ground will never actually "need" a WDH. Even with 2,000 pounds of tongue weight the front wouldn't be as light as a gas RAM 2500 pulling nothing!

Agree.

I brought the truck home today! 70 miles on it so far with a "lifetime" average of 20.1 mpg on the readout - 60% of that was highway with Cruise set to 70mph. Given that it has the 3.73 gears, elephant mirrors and isn't broken in, I'm very please with MPG empty.

And of course, the obligatory pictures!

How did you get 3.73 gears, I thought the lowest on the F150 was 3.55?

Its all about the hitch, not the truck. I owned a 2004 3/4 ton Ram and then a 2011 3/4 ton Chevy. The Chevy had a true class V hitch, rated at something like 2000 lb or 1500 lbs of tongue weight and 11,000 lbs trailer weight. It was a much larger and heavier built hitch.

The only way to get the 3.73 gears on a 2018 with the 3.5 ecoboost is with the heavy duty payload package (HDPP).

HDPP gives you everything Max tow gives you plus:
-9.75" HD axle with 3.73 gear (HD is because the axle tube is thicker and oil capacity higher than the Max tow 9.75") Also rated higher at 4800 RGAWR
-Thicker frame stock (HDPP >10% thicker than Max tow which is > 10% thicker than non-Max tow)
-3+1 rear leaf spring pack instead of the normal 2+1
- thicker stronger front coils than any non-HDPP F150 (but same FGAWR as highest rated non-HDPP option)
- stronger wheels & LT instead of P tires

Few dealers stock them so for most it is a special order item.

Very detailed response, thanks.

Very similar to what I found when researching before ordering my HDPP F150 back in '13. It rides so nice it instantly became our main vehicle for family trips, errands, vacations, everything. Even this many years later, people still compliment how well it rides compared to their cars or trucks. Of all the cars and trucks I've owned, this has been my best vehicle by far.

Well this kills most any thought of F150 HDPP.

I confirmed the above is a unicorn, Not available as a SuperCAB with 6-1/2 ft bed (145" WB) in any form.

The Supercrew is too long, might as well go with a 3/4 ton.

The current batch of 3/4 ton and 1 ton SRW trucks are very nice. The only reasons I didn't go that way were roof clearance and cost. You either pay for diesel up front or you pay for lower MPG every day. I figure it's about the same either way so get your preference.

The only caution is that a fully loaded diesel 3/4 ton usually has a lower payload than most people think. I've seen several at ~2,000 pounds give or take. If going diesel, makes sense to go 1 ton SRW to get the payload back that is lost from the weight of a diesel in a 3/4 ton.
