On our new 4520, the exhaust is pointed foward and down at a forty five degree angle. It's at the perfect angle and doesn't blow any soot on the axle or on the loader. You can always add it later if you want it, but I like the open view.

Now you got me thinking. I thought the stack had to be factory install? I've already got some soot build up (more on the QA frame than the loader) but I may be looking into that. Sounds like you aren't having the same problem though which is good:thumbsup:

Nope, you can sure do the install yourself. For the vertical stack where is goes through the hood, there is already a pre-marked hole where you use a hole saw to cut through it. I thought I remember those kits being in the ball park price in the $200 range but I could be wrong.

We had the vertical stack on our OS 4120 and I loved it. Thought it wasn't a neccessity for the cab model. :)

Nice 90 minutes or so with the dealer today. So far seems like a real straight shooter and impressed me with how he handled things. We'll see what the prices look like next.

About the exhaust, never had any problems with the standard issue. Unless something changes I prefer to maintain the clear visibility with the standard down draft exhaust.

I confused about (or aboot for you Canadians) all the hype over vertical vs horizontal exhausts myself.

My old JD870 had a vertical exhaust stack that made the left loader arm all black and soot coated.

My new exhaust is way out front and turned out so as not to mark up anything

so whats the reason for changing them in the first place???

Usually you see the opposite of what you've experienced. Deere's websites states that it's for if your going through wet areas where water could get in and certain types of vegetation that don't like the exhaust. I have soot coated on more on my QA frame than the loader itself on the 3120 but have a vertical exhaust on the 5410 and has no soot anywhere on the tractor - the vert exhaust also came standard on it though.

I confirmed with the dealer that the "creep to reposition" is indeed an option on the 485 with the 4520. I noticed it is in the implement book to, though there it is called "Crop to Reposition" ;)

Did you see how it would be to control the loader from the cab and where the switch would be located?

He is looking in to it - he's aware of it, but has yet to install one. The latest Implement book states you can control tractor engine speed and movement from the backhoe - that's about all it says. Assuming I get one, it will have that feature... though it might be quicker to dismount, hop in the cab, and reposition of the creep is that slow!

Creep to reposition controls work very well, I can easily drive the tractor around the worksite with it. On a 110tlb it is easy enough to reach the fel joystick but I wonder about the rear mounted backhoe on a cab 4520. The other issue is brakes, you don't have access to these from the rear, hence the need for easy access to the fel. Having put many hours on the 110 I can negotiate some steep grades using the creep to reposition controls but it does take a little practice.

Just curious about the arms reach to the fel joystick and if the rear window can be left open while digging using the 4520 and 480 backhoe. I would wan't to try all of this out to see if it would work for me.
