Hearing problems?

My wife was trying to find a cricket in the garage yesterday. She was trying to track it down by the sound and wanted me to help her. I couldn't as I can't hear crickets anymore. That sound is the same thing I hear constantly from tinnitus. She also mentioned noise coming from a cicada a few weeks ago that I couldn't hear.
Are there any aids that will help with that?

It probably depends on what frequencies your hearing loss is and to what extent that loss in in that range. For me my aides do not help since my loss is to great at those frequencies. I can occasionally hear birds, mostly sparrows chirping. Resound also allows me adjust some sound levels but still cannot hear higher frequencies. Audiologist told my wife he is not lying he can’t hear you and it is not all selective hearing…

If you are noticing more and more times you don’t understand something I would suggest schedule a meeting with a good audiologist and then discuss your options. Aides can and do help but they do not replace natural hearing.

My hearing problems got worse about twenty years ago. When holding the telephone receiver to my left ear I could not understand what was being said. If I moved the receiver to the right ear I could understand everything just fine.

To make a long story short there was a tumor growing in the left side bony canal destroying the auditory nerve: Acoustic Neuroma Explained | The Center for Acoustic Neuroma Dallas, Texas

The surgeon removed the tumor (acoustic neuroma) before it destroyed the facial nerve.

That left me with no hearing on the left side. I had hoped the tinnitus would stop on the left side, but it didn't, it is in the brain, not the hearing organ that got removed.

I have been going back to the same doctor/surgeon, he recently told me hearing aids would help the old age hearing loss. Recommended the Phonak Audeo P90 for the right ear and paired CROS for the left ear. It wirelessly transmits its output to the unit on the right side.

Cost was $6k, but I am hearing high frequency sounds that I haven't heard in many years, like birds chirping and crickets. I can understand what my wife is saying now without having to be up close in front of her.

I can now hear and understand someone that comes up on my left.

It also has a program I can switch to to minimize road noise when we are in the truck.

Should have bought them years ago.

I have age related high frequency hearing loss and tried the amplifiers with little success. I was about to go for the Phonak's when I came across these from Eargo:

Like the Phonak, they are individually tunable via an app and are a bit cheaper. I also like the fact that they fit completely inside the auditory canal and are 95% invisible. Everyone is different though and what works for some may not for all.

Yep, I know what you mean.

It is hard to describe the sounds that I hear continuously from tinnitus.
It is several high frequencies and very loud, making it hard to hear someone talking to me.

Sometimes there is an added pulsating sound like a cymbal hit by a drumstick.

Same on my side, i was struggling with the partial hearing loss couple of years and finally decided to buy my first aids. Hearing aids staten island are the best when it comes to value for money. Of course it is not only your choice, but had to be discussed with the professional audiologist first. What is suitable for one person, can be absolutely not suitable for the other one.

Best value for the money is the Neosonic hearing amplifier. It comes with a mic built into the necklace and also a little mic that can be mounted below the TV, $139.

I can hear the news fine. I sit here in the mornings working at the computer with the TV on the other side of the wall behind me. I hear the news fine with the little mic at the TV.

With mic on the necklace, I was playing and hearing fine the Youtube videos for the first time. Before, no way could I hear and understand what was being said even with the iPad sound cranked up.

Not for those of you with tons of vanity who want to hide your hearing aids.

FINALLY got my DD214 from the VA. Could get hearing aids free from them, but the red tape is awful. Hearing aids make my ears feel "stuffed" when I have them on, and the feeling continues for a couple of hours or so afterwards. The Neosonic has ear buds. They do not give me the stuffed feeling.

I tried another hearing aid amplifier. It was a box with a mic attached to it that fed to head phones. Gave feed back at high volumes, and volume was not high enough for me to hear. Returned it and got my $99 back from Amazon. Neosonic apparently is a standout. I have the NW10. There appears to be a NW20 that is supposed to be even better, about $40 more.
