John Deere 790
Hello, this is my first post. I've been reading here since just before purchasing my tractor last summer, and I have found some very helpful information. I decided it was time to register.

I do have a specific question. I've been offered a heat houser off a JD 750 for a yet to be determined "reasonable" price. I have not yet seen the unit. Does anybody know if it can be reworked to fit my 790?

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to TBN, the best source of information for tractors on the Internet....we can always use more members who know the best tractors are GREEN. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I do not know what a heat houser is, might I hazard a guess you mean an enclosed cab of sorts?

Thanks for the quick reply.

Yes, a heat houser is basically a soft cab made of canvas from near the front of the tractor (to retain engine heat) back to and surrounding the operator. They usually have a frame of sorts made from metal rods or tubing. Many have plastic windows on the front and sides. A few have a canvas or tarp roof. Rear entry tractors like our old Oliver 77 have no doors; you simply step up and on the tractor. Side entry tractors have a simple hinged portion of the frame for a door to enter. Construction is minimal, not like a normal cab. Its purpose is to keep you out of the wind and also to direct some of the engine heat back to you. Compared to nothing at all, they work wonders. I spent many late autumn days discing or plowing corn fields in a heat houser equipped tractor. By the way, we always new them as heat housers. I think some may call them heater cabs or soft cabs. A company called Femco still makes them for modern tractors.

I think this is what you're looking at Valu-Bilt .

Depending upon the price of the heat houser from the 750 and amount of modification needed, you might want to look at Original Tractor Cab Co. . I purchased this one for my 790 (pre-2002) for $550 including shipping. It's quite sturdy (tubular frame) and took a few hours to install.

Welcome to tbn. Good to see other MI posters who Are "green". I have a 790 w/ a Lucknow 60" rear blower and have been considering the same thing. My grandad had a couple of Farmalls that he put heat housers on in the Winter.

That is a nice looking cab. I would buy one except they only list them for the pre 2002 model 790. I bought my tractor new the summer of 2003. Any idea what changed in 2002?

By the way, the unit that fit the 750 turned out not to be available after all; so I am still shopping. Thanks for the link to Valu-bilt, however I am trying to find one that is custom fit (or close to it) before settling on a universal.

My JD dealer says they can get a brand called Regal that will fit my tractor. Has anybody heard of them?

Magruder,
How do you like your rear blower? I am using my bucket in the front and an old 6 ft. rear blade with pretty good success.

Farmdoc - Sorry I've been away for awhile. As far as pre-2002 vs 2003, outside of engine change in horsepower and availability for 419 loader vs. 70 loader, I honestly don't know about other differences. The only modification we had to do, was to drill out an existing hole on each side of the center console to install a wellnut (rubber coated threaded female fastener).

The OTC cab frame mounts as follows: - 2 bolts on the center console (using wellnuts), 2 flat brackets on both rear fenders (one under the left rear handle and the other thru thru the two plastic blank inserts on the right fender, two clamp attachments on the left & right foot supports and a bracket that fits under the upper ROPS bolts. If you'll send me a PM with an email address or a mailing address, I'll try to PDF the install manual or make a paper copy and send it to you. Also I think the original thread (2210 Cab Choices) had some photos of the install.

Perhaps Yellowsocks (who works for a JD dealer) or someone else could chime in about the differences. I'm curious what OTC had to say about it as well.

Farmdoc, I haven't used it much til this year. We have a long gravel drive and the first couple of snows until you get a base it pitches alot of stones. Otherwise it does a nice job.

I used a rear blade before I got the 790, on an older IH 384. That did ok too. Magruder

That heat houser looks nice. I gotta get me one
on my 4310. I might have problems with garage door
clearance though. I guess I'll just have to build another
storage building. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
