Insulate...

Spend less money on new TVs and such...

move south...

We as a country have gotten fat, and used to living on credit rather than what we earn. Stuff that was normal for me growing up is now "Hardship". I don't buy it.

I've done my best to stop patronizing the oil companies. This year i purchased a pellet stove to compliment my woodstove, which is my primary heat source. I hope to burn less than 10 gallons of heating oil this winter. I'm sure this is not feasable for many, but we can all do what we can, while we can. I'm quite sure its only a matter of time before our government bans ALL woodburning for heat, since they aren't making the tax dollars from it that they would like. They will claim its because of "pollution", but we all know its the all-mighty buck they want from your pocket. You may think its not possible for the gummit to ban all woodburning, but look around....... its already happening (even stated in this thread) !!!

My son was complaining about the price of gas. I asked him what he would think if he could only buy 10 gallons at a time and only every other day (and sometimes not every other day). He said that would be terrible. I then told him about the first energy "crisis" we ignored 30+ years ago.

We got nothing to really complain about. But that does not stop us :D

I agree with much of your post. I certainly hope the "govt" does not attempt to ban woodstoves in rural areas. I can sympathize with restricting stoves in towns and cities. However the new EPA stoves such as those from Central Boiler produce VERY little smoke as I recently witnessed at an open house.

Slightly off-topic.. What is the going price for a quality wood stove installed cost?

Lots of variables here. Size of stove, distance from house, method of heat transfer, and type of pipe connecting the home to the stove are some items that will have a bearing on the cost. That being said, probably average cost is somewhere in $5-$7k range.

The Northern CA Wood Burn ban affects all 9 Bay Area Counties... many of which are very rural in part.

The Ban includes all wood burning, including pellets and the Bay Area Air Quality Management District decides which days the No Burn Rules apply.

It was argued by many that EPA Catalyst Equipped Stoves and Pellet Stoves should be exempt due the very low particulate output.

The District decided it would be too difficult for enforcement officers to differentiate whether a stove was certified or not... thus the outright ban certain times of the year.

They also have a voluntary stove buy back program if you remove your wood stove and a tip hot line to report anyone suspected of burning on no burn days...

The family has acres of Oak Tree and we always had people asking for firewood after wind storms and such... I can't even give it away today...

You'd think they would be more worried about forest fires, then what wood stoves do. plowking
