After 3months of researching (including a lot here at TBN), i bit the bullet. On Monday, had a contractor with an Hitachi tracked excavotr clear 30' paths all around a 4 acre parcel of thick brush. Pushed over 6" trees like they were toothpicks. He'll finish early next week to remove some rocks - this series of fields were clearly not furrowed, probably just for grazing.
I've got one reasonably wet area, lots of tire-popping sapling stubs to be chainsawed and lots of brush to the sidelines to chip. Found a small apple orchard that can probably be reclaimed.
I'm left with a lot of very uneven land, remarkably rich topsoil.
Today I bought a new Kubota L3130 HST w/ indu tires, w/FEL with removable cutting edge, 6' box scraper, 5' Land Pride HD rotary cutter, Wallenstein PTO-powered wood chipper (self feed and blower) and a spreader. $25,500 plus tax, delivery next week!
The more I looked for used HSTs w/ <1000 hours from dealers, I found the prices were close enough to new that they weren't justified. Lots of used MFs from rental yards (no thanks), most of the Kubotas had belly mowers (that I won't use) and the used JDs were darn close in $ to the new Kubota. I'm not knowledgeable enough about tractors to buy from a private party.
I wanted to reach for a 3830, but they are scarce in eastern Massachusetts.
Visited 3 Kubota dealers and has good reaction to each. Visited 2 JD dealers with one being good and the other had an attitude.
Can't wait for next Thursday!!
