Heavy oil leak – possible it's the filter?

I had one hst filter gasket fail in -5 degree f weather. There was a TSB issued for filter replacement for States just north of me.
It is also possible that the gasket is doubled up causing the leak, but that is usually evident immediately upon use.
Even if the welding is not the leak issue, look real close at the whole thing. I see a cracked casing at one of the bolts.

Update for those following my adventure.. Unscrewed the filter, and the gasket appears to be in good shape, but it is not attached/seated into the filter itself (photo below).

Is this typical? Every filter I have ever taken off (cars, garden tractor), the filter is always well seated into the filter and never comes out.

I know, the oil is not supposed to look like that (first things first 😅)

LMK if you think this may be the culprit, or if it's common that the gasket comes off loose when removing an old filter.

I think to test whether the filter is in fact the issue, I'll get a new filter, install it, top off the oil and try to run the tractor a bit. If it holds up, I'll move ahead with draining and replacing the hydraulic oil. Advice welcome 🙏

My filters do not have a captive seal. It fits in a very shallow recess

My concern is the moisture is making it into the system through a crack

Yea, tractor had been left outside in the past, previous owner told me it would need new hydraulic oil. Have been keeping it covered since I got it. And hoping (with a bit of luck) I can get it up to proper maintenance schedule and keep the oil clean from there on out. Will be on the hunt for more cracks and issues as I go.

I think a good cleaning and spray the area with foot powder (oil leak will show up) asap, see where the leak is. Busted case is common:

Interesting post I came across... It looks like the filter I had on is the Wix 557088, but a few reports of blown gaskets are here, stating that the New Holland filters are built to withstand more pressure to prevent that from happening. Now to see if I can track down one of the more powerful filters...

Appears my tractor has already been down that road and now sports some of the scars from a weld job like they mention. Praying they hold up!

I will def do the cleaning/foot powder option once I have fixed the filter issue. IMO signs are pointing to that being the source of my leak at the moment, though I think hunting for other leaks is in order as well.

Same here, I had been told to always look for the gasket to be left behind when changing a filter, but had never seen one in person in decades of changing oil... But the first time I changed my main hydraulic filter, the gasket was off the filter and stuck to the housing. Weird!
