Tractor
Ford 4000 diesel
This is my first post. Just wanted to say that I'm looking for my first tractor. Got a few leads. I tried an auction Thursday, but I didn't win the one I was looking at (2004 BX23 with FEL, BH, and BM, 569 hrs.). It went for $8700. My limit was $8000. I'm bummed about it.

Anyway, just wanted to say hi to the community.

Welcome to the boards Geo. You'll love owning a tractor, they can help you out in ways you haven't even thought of yet. The BX is pretty versatile, if your looking for suggestions, maybe you can describe what you plan on using if for. Also search for "first tractor" etc, and read away. Shopping is a lot of fun. Be patient, and make sure you know what you want before buying. Best of luck.

I have a 2004 BX23 with FEL BH and 60 inch mower.
You should have went the $8700 dollars on the one you looked at .
There is no way I'd part with mine for under $10000 and it has twice the hours as the one you looked at.

You gave up a great deal for a lousy $700 bucks .You ought to be bummed out about it.
It's hard to get any BX with a fel and a mower on it for 8000 dollars much less one with a Backhoe on it.

Y'all, it was pretty rough. It needed some work. Additionally, That lousy $700 was $700 more than I had to spend at that moment (per my credit union. will up the limit tomorrow). Plus I would have had to pay st. taxes on top of that. +/- another $800. So we're now up to $9500, and I don't even know the full extent of the referb that needs to be done.

Thanks,
I'm a longtime homebuilder, so I know what a help a tractor can be, as I have rented many a backhoe in my time. I am just tired of renting as far as my little 5 ac. "estate" goes, so I'm looking to get a machine that will do it all around the house. It can't weigh too much though, as I need to be able to drive/mow over septic fill lines. I was looking at the JD2305 at first, but it looks like I'll be able to get a BX24 for a better price. I need all three attachments mentioned, but also I would like to have the 3pt. hitch setup to attach a boxblade, as I have a long gravel driveway that needs dressing from time to time.

Hey, Welcome... and yea, those little machines can do a bunch of stuff. I've yet to find a deal at an auction... other people had more money then me!!! And who knows... if you went to 9k the other guy could have just paid more. I almost hate to bid on something... it makes the other guy pay more!!!

JD, you kind of defeat the purpose of a very nice feature on this website... see photo. ;):D

In reality, with the economy as it is, you might just be able to find a better one for less money, given the right amount of groundwork. Don't give up on the JD, as my neighbor just replaced his JD for what I consider a very good deal.(and from a dealer!!) As far as being "$700" behind on that auction, don't sweat it, as you never know just how much the other guy was willing to pay. He might have made a deal with the devil and had to have that particular machine in order to redeem his soul. Or he might have been like you, and not been prepared for the machine to go quite that high, and would have backed out on the next bid. You will never know for sure, so don't sweat it, just go on to the next deal and have the funding to pay what your research says (and your budget) it is worth. Nothing is worth going over your budget for, especially if you have to account for it to another.

Welcome to the board, the more homebuilders the better, got plenty of questions for people like you.

I agree with the state of the economy statement. They are saying national unemployment may hit 10%+, if that is the case, unfortunately there may be a number of people looking to downsize and tractors, for the non-income-dependent-on-the-tractor crowd they are some of the first things to go.

I for one am anxiously looking forward to things turning around.

Welcome to the forum. Before you buy used price something in your size new. I tried buying used. It was a bad experience. I drove hundreds of miles to look at tractors that were beat to death and the price wasn't all that far from new. I got fed up and went to a dealer and said I want "this much horse power with a diesel engine". That was the way to go for me. I spent about $2,000 more for new than the best used that I looked at.

Thank you all for the warm welcome. I think I'm going to buy a Kubota from an aquantance of mine. He has an L2900 with a FEL, box blade, 60" bushhog, "forks-on-a-rod", a tow-behind spray rig, and an elevated fuel storage tank. All I need to find to complete the package is a backhoe attachment. I can live without the belly mower, and get a finish mower in a couple of months.

I really could use some help finding a BH. Would prefer a used BH76 or the like. But I guess I could go with an "aftermarket" brand if it is going to be to tough to find a kubota brand. Price is a factor too. Hence the part about being used. I've googled "Kubota backhoe attachment used" and can't find anything.

Hello, geo....

It's generally best to not get in a hurry when tractor buying.......but, I guess that maxim applies to buying just about anything. I looked, perused, sniffed at, dickered with, and kicked tires for about 2 years until I found mine and she was a charity case that just didn't have that "shine." Got her for a song and put a little money into her where it counts and now she's a champ.

Too that, in general, tractor auctions have a less-than-desireable aura about them. Why would a tractor need to go to auction if it was a sellable item for the owner on the market? When you say the little Kubota was rather rough at $8700 that's why it was at the auction house and not on a dealer lot...because they were having a hard time moving it at whatever price they were asking for it and wanted to be rid of it.

Many years ago a monied gent out of the Metroplex bought a ranch in our area and by word of mouth he called me one day about (among other things) coming over and helping he and his new foreman with the equipment he'd bought for farming. He'd gone to an auction somewhere and made that house's fiscal quarter with the questionable iron he'd bought up......IH 1586 tractor that he thought was a steal at $8500 along with a leaking turbo, clutch in name only, interior that looked like a mountain lion and a bear had fought a death match in, hydro outlets frozen, hydro controls that would not remain engaged for any period of time, bad tires all the way around, non-working heat/ac. That poor tractor needed a good $10k worth of work to be a reliable unit for his plans. Often times, that is what you get at an auction.

Yeah, in retrospect, I suppose I'm glad I didn't win it. I was starting to get the idea I need something bigger anyway. That's why I'm pretty sure I'm gonna buy this L2900 from my friend. He's a commercial pilot, so you know he takes meticulous care of his equipment. It's as clean and solid as one could hope for in a used tractor.

George,

Don't worry about missing out on the tractor at the auction. There will be others and probably cheaper ones too!!! Stick with your budget and be patient. It's the buyers who get all itchy about buying now and caught up in the heat of the buy that spend more then they wanted to.

We have one here once a month. I've made one purchase in several yeas of going there. It's not that there are not allot of deals out there, I'm just looking for a steal. LOL I've missed out on a few that went allot less then I was expecting them to, and had others get out of control and sell for more then they should have. Mostly that's what happens to me.

If somebody else buys it, that's fine, there is always another day and another deal to be found.

Good luck,
Eddie
