The P218G is the 18 hp version that came in the Case 448 and some John Deere garden tractors. So definitely not original.

Here is a used one on eBay: Case Ingersol 446 Onan BF-MS/2891E OEM 12V Electric Starter C29733 | eBay

And some more if it is the right one: onan p218 starter | eBay

Thank you for everyone who provoked me to act in order to solve my starter issue. After looking at the model and serial number of my Case 446, I have purchased a starter from Ebay. I was looking for a starter to fit the P218G engine . It will be delivered Thursday 2/22.

Sincerely RJC

Thanks for the feedback. I actually purchased a starter just like the bottom picture featured on your post. The only difference is the stud location which is at the cast base protruding perpendicular to the bottom. I also had to disassemble the spring and gear because the pictured mounting assembly does not match with the original . The starter works fine but now I have to do some trouble shooting with the wires to the solenoid because the starter just spins but doesn't lock out to engage the flywheel. This is my next task. I hope to reinstall the starter today and then contend with the solenoid wiring so that the Case 446 will be operational by then. My wiring seems all screwed up with a brown wire that seems to go nowhere since I took out the ammeter. If anyone can help with that , any input or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks to all of those who have given me input so far- thanks. I believe with the support base of knowledgeable members in this forum, I can save money and get an education at the same time.

Hi Everyone;
I did discover that my Case is a 446 and I have the model and serial number of the engine that mystarter was attached to. The Model number is P218G-1/10936G and the serial number is H963578524.
I hope this helps.
Thanks,
RJC

Right, the Case 446 had a 16 HP opposed twin cylinder Onan engine. The Case 448 had a 18 HP opposed twin cylinder Onan engine. The model number that you posted is the 18 HP engine, a direct bolt in swap, that someone did previously.

Tomorrow, if it would help, I'll go out to the shed and take a look at my Case 448......18 HP....Onan engine. ... will look for that brown wire or see what the OE manual says.

Thank you for taking the time to assist me. My starter turns when I turn the key but the bendix mechanism does not lock out into the flywheel. The issue may be the wiring to the solenoid or a defective solenoid. I have 2 brown wires, a red wire with a inline fuse, a yellow wire, a blue wire which connect to the solenoid besides the thick red wires going to the starter and positive side of the battery and a black ground wire which connects from the solenoid to the negative terminal of the battery. I'm not sure if this solenoid has to be grounded but I have it bolted to metal. My engine is a twin cylinder Onan engine and may be a direct bolt sway as Xfaxman indicated. My issue with wiring began when I discovered a mouse nest in the battery compartment and some of the insulation was chewed off of the wires . This time, when I get the wires right from the ignition switch to the solenoid, battery, starter, etc. I will draw myself a diagram and save it for future reference. I am actually located in the woods in Cohocton with a trout stream in my back yard .

Thank you for taking the time to assist me. My starter turns when I turn the key but the bendix mechanism does not lock out into the flywheel.
----------------------------------

The Bendix moving out is strictly mechanical. The starter has to spin fast enough and the Bendix has to be clean.
