Hello all. New member, Schips here.
Quick question is the emissions on new tractors real headache?
Looking to buy first tractor and am planning on buying more than I need.

Welcome aboard!

Emissions are reported as being a lot better than they were several years ago. Although I might not fear them now, I bought a used tractor at the end of 2019 to avoid them.

Can't help you with emission tractors. My newest is a 1986.

I personally try to avoid emissions but, the new tractors seem to be relatively trouble free with only minor inconveniences from DPF regens. I don’t know what size tractor and how much power you need but, emissions alone wouldn’t stop me from buying the tractor I want/need.

Welcome Schips, what size (HP) are you considering? There are cutoffs for emissions based on hp. I have a L3901 which has a DPF, Diesel Particulate Filter. It’s recommended to run higher rpms to keep exhaust temps. higher, my tractor will go to regen maybe every 50hrs or so, never been an issue, just up the rpms and keep working until regen is complete 15-20 minutes. Maybe a small issue of I were ready to finish work for the day and the regen light comes on.

I don't have one, my understanding is that you don't want to let them idle at low RPM. Run them hot with more PRM's (My tractor would be dead since I constantly let it run at 1000 rpm's...)

Yeah a new tractor is not a deciding factor. Am willing to get a older one if it works for me.

Over 25hp, I think you will find most tractors to have at least a DPF, unless you go older used. I can only speak for my Kubota, it’s not been an issue, but I only have 200hrs. On it.

Though I live on 10 or 12 acres I only have about 2 cleared. My tractor is a 45 year old Yanmar YM2310. It has a front end loader (FEL), 27 HP engine, and 23 HP at the PTO. This tractor gets used a lot. The FEL is super useful and I made an extension for it that more than doubles the cubic carrying capacity. This enables me to load up a bunch of brush and tree limbs when cleaning up and transport the stuff to the burn pile. I have a 5 foot wide Yanmar tiller that I use behind the tractor as well as a 4 foot wide box blade and a post hole digger. The post hole digger gets used mainly for planting trees and other plants. Even if I had 4 acres cleared I don't think I would need a bigger tractor.

Emissions are problematic if you want/need to idle regularly or run at lower RPM's. Newer units 2012 and up that have tier 4I and tier 4, don't like to idle and you need to run it like you stole it.
Personally I won't have any thing with Tier 4, my Bobcat is the last of the Tier 3's. However I have worked on several neighbors that have had emission problems. Some I can fix and other need to go to the dealer for computer work.

I have not had any emissions problems so far in around 240 hrs on a 2850m massey ferguson but I don't let it idle for long periods. I owned a LS tractor that had DPF and did not have any issues with it either but I got rid of it to get the bigger massey ferguson. I would not let the DPF stop me from getting the tractor I wanted.

I got by with a 30 HP L2550DT Kubota on 77 acres for years until adding a IH 584 about 10 years ago.. It did a lot of work and continues to do so and shows it. 6700 hours at last check.
There are places for each tractor although probably 90% of my work is still done with the Kubota.
One piece of advice I have is whatever you get, protect it from the elements and follow or exceed the manufacturers maintenance recommendations. Grease is your friend. DO NOT let joints get dry or you will have issues.
If you get 4WD, only use 4WD when necessary to avoid undue wear and stress.
Keep the fuel tank full to avoid condensation in the tank and moisture in the fuel.
Do not test it to see how much it can haul. If you have any thoughts in that direction make two trips.

After I got some hours on my new tractor, 3 yrs ago, it started to do a regen while I was working with it. Since the saleman, when I bought it knew nothing about it, I didn't know what to do. I quickly got the manual and read it. After that one time, it has never been a problem for me. If you run it at low rpms most of the time, it regenerates more often. If you keep the rpms up, those occur around 50hrs on my kubota, I just crank up the rpms and continue working.

For only an acre you might do better with a strong lawn and garden tractor. Save your bucks until you purchase the more acreage you're dreaming about instead of blowing it on more tractor than you currently need. Tractor dealers love it when someone comes down with horsepower disease.

Moving firewood is very different from mowing or chopping down fields.

And dealers must love those that dont plan for the future.
Reading a post here about a lot of light implements that are hard to sell.
I go big on the first go, fix up the yard I terraformed with a shovel and wheelbarrow. Too old to do that anymore, lol.
