I wouldn't dream of riding a bike without a helmet but I also think it should be optional. The same with seatbelts. I really don't need the government telling me what to do, whether it's a helmet or a light bulb. America never would have been founded if the leaders we have today tried to write the constitution (really don't think they could have found enough paper to even write down all the rights).

Exactly! Our country was founded on freedom for the individual. What people have not been taught the last roughly 100 years is that freedom is dependent upon personal responsibility!!!

You missed the point Robert, It's called An accident.

I understood your point, mine is that when the chance of injury or death increases so does the amount of rules/laws regulating it. A person being hit by a car leaving a road is very slim so no one worries about it. The chances of a motorcyclist being injured or killed on a daily basis is high enough to bring attention to it and regulations follow.

Back in the day, I raced dirt bikes. (Enduros and Hare Scrambles) One of my sponsors was a bike shop near here. The owner had a sign made up to promote sales of higher end helmets. It pretty much summed up my thoughts on wearing helemts on a motorcycle.

"If you have a $20 brain, wear a $20 helmet"
"If you have a $500 brain, wear a $500 helmet"
"If you have NO brain, wear NO helmet"

Not sure what this means, but I wore a $300 helemt with a $500 paint job..... :)

A group of us formed a club, leased a farm, and held AMA sanctioned Hare Scrambles. We had a rule that was strictly enforced. If you were caught so much as just sitting on a running bike while NOT wearing a helmet, you were banned from the property. Anything less than that would have been a proverbial shot in the foot to the image of the sport.

The point isn't about the device (Helmet). The question is, "How deep do you let government into your life and make your decisions for you?" You think requiring you wear a helmet when you ride your tractor isn't far away?

Two questions, if helmets are so safe why don't they require them in cars? (44,000 people killed in cars last year - 2/3rd by head injury and if you wear one you will get a ticket)

Second, why do freedom of choice states have a lower death and accident rate than mandated states per 100,000 miles ridden according to the NHTSA?

Won't need a helmet if you don't pass your CDL exam. (another thread)

Because few senators ride bikes, and they'd never be able to hold a cell to their head with a helmet on.

Because, obviously, good sense is alive and well in the states that still have some control over government intrusion.

So I guess the right to prove one's self to be an idiot on a motorcycle is still alive....until it hits a curb anyway....

One needs to pick their battles. Standing up for basic rights is admirable. Standing up for the right to have no common sense might not be representing that argument in a very positive light.

No, I DO NOT think enactment of laws requiring wearing a helmet on a tractor are anywhere on the horizon.

The majority DOES have a right to be protected from the financial burden of irresponsible actions of a select few. This from someone who's so far to the right, Glenn Beck would consider me an extremist.

I'm thinking it may already be too late for some folks to protect their brains................

90% of all statistics are made up on the spot.....I'd like to see facts that show NOT wearing a helmet saves lives. TWO different AMA's (American Motorcyclist Assoc./ American Medical Assoc.) stats says otherwise (by a rather lopsided margin)

When you are driving a tractor with two wheels that does not have ROPS or a seatbelt, we can talk about that.

How many of those 44,000 people had a seat belt on? If you are in a car with a seatbelt on, you are probbaly going to survive an accident.

Citation needed. Last I heard, in the states that made it optional to wear a helmet, deaths went up significantly.
