Tires burn really well, but most automobile tires nowadays have steel belts and it is a real nuisance to have all those little steel wires out in the field amongst the ashes...so, I no longer burn tires, and, after a couple of exciting experiences, I also don't even consider using gasoline anymore.

I deliberately left this out of my previous post to not give people the idea to use a tire to start a burn. :D In NC, it is specifically banned from use. If the fire marshal or Forest Service checks on you, and sees the tire or the steel belts, you will be in trouble.:)

I never would have thought to use a tire until I saw that it was banned. :D Then I thought, you know a tire would really help get the fire going.:laughing::laughing:

I know this is going to sound crazy, but I need everyones help!
I am a Registered Nurse and I work in the Burn ICU. Over the past four years our number of burns that have been throwing gas on brush piles is astounding. Unforunately the majority of these burns spend 3-4 months in our ICU (and leave with a bill of over $1 million dollars IF they survive and I place a HUGE emphasis on IF...because they typically do not!)

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. This is a HUGE problem and you would be assisting me in saving many lives each year!

This does not sound crazy to me, as I am one of the lucky "IF's". At the age of three, I spent 6 months in the hospital and another year in physical therapy after skin graphs to my leg. The doctor wanted to just amputate, but my Mom refused to let him. At the ER, before transporting to a larger hospital, I came out of shock screaming, and my Mom asked the doctor if there was something they could me for the pain. The doctor replied, "You would be surprised at how much a pain a baby can withstand". They had to drag my Mom off the doctor, as she was intent on showing him how much pain a Mother can dish out.
Mine wasn't from gas, just a burn barrel left unattended by a neighbor that got out of control. I learned early that stomping on fires isn't the best method of extinguishing.
Thanks for your efforts,
David from Jax

I had a neighbor who would save up all the old electrical wire he could get his hands on and would burn that as well so he could sell the copper for scrap. If you've ever had any HAZMAT or HAZWOPER training you would realize just how bad of an idea it is to burn anything other than natural products.

I'm in total shock!!! I sure have learned something today. I was a boy scout. I sure thought a lot of other were too. I've never thought of using anything but old newspaper, cardboard, and small branches. It takes just minutes to start a good fire, so what is the purpose of using the petroleum products??? I really had no clue so many people used them. Stay safe people.

You guys must be using gas much more inflammable than the fresh gas I have used many times. I never get an explosion. Just a forceful WHOOSH. Gas burns too fast to start a fire well, but I havnt seen it explode. You have to pen it up to get that.
