Help! Branson Tractor only IDLES - no Power

If a tractor has a “limp mode”, does that mean the throttle isn’t directly connected to the pump? That is, how does it cancel the throttle position and limit rpms?

Here is a link where you can get the service manual. This tractor is all mechanical and does not have a limp mode.

thanks all... i will relay info to my shop tech and have check whats been mentioned and report back.... He is a great diesel mechanic but with no service manual etc.. its a little tougher to diagnosis.
Don't worry. Dealers never even got access to a manual specific to the 4720h nor did they ever release the diagnostic software/hardware for the DPF system.

we did move the lever by hand and nada... yes its .5 secs so i was going to order both sensors (temp sensor and pressure sensor)
The sensors will have absolutely no effect on it running. Emissions system is totally passive on these. Have worked on Bransons since 2006 and got to deal with emissions crap on these when it was new.

It's got a regular mechanical pump operated by the throttle lever and the HST pedals, and a passive DPF+DOC (which the manual calls a DPF). The only electronics is the data recorder which has sensors for pressure differential across the DPF and the temperature, and maybe tracks running time. The data recorder operates the DPF light on the dash and that's about it. It's got an OBD2 looking port but none of my readers could get anything off it. The manual mentions a reader but I think that is a dealer-only item.

There's no limp mode. The computer is too limited for that. If it's doesn't rev with the DPF removed then I think it's a fuel problem. Could be the FI pump is broken inside so moving the lever does not change the injection volume (which seems like it'd be rare), or the flow from the tank is limited in some way.

I would check the air filter as well as all the intake ducts. Air must get in before it can get out.

Also, check if the shut off lever on the filter housing is open or close. If it's horizontal, it's close. If it's vertical, then it's open.

Jerflynn, you mentioned that you moved the throttle level by hand and nothing........ Did you verify that moving the throttle by hand is actually moving the linkage at the injector pump. This still seems to me to be a throttle linkage problem.

I would agree that it seems to be a throttle issue,
have you physically moved the linkage on the injection pump trying for more rpm.
Also it would be strange but how is the governor setup on that tractor,
could it be holding the actual throttle closed.
Also is the fuel shut off solenoid fully activating to the run mode.

OK. Yeah, without cookin' it for a couple of hours at 500C blowing and washing it out doesn't do much. I've used a modified ceramic kiln myself before. One way to make for sure that is it is to pull the plug in the exhaust manifold are try running it for just a few seconds without the DPF installed.

Looking for advice and help on a Branson Tractor Model 4720H..

Long Story short... My fathernlaw borrowed a neighbors tractor right before he was diagnosis with Stage 4 Brain Cancer and apparently it messed up on him while he was using it... He has since passed and now i have inherited the problem to fix.

Before he passed he had ordered a new fuel pump and said that is all that was needed as it wasnt getting fuel

.. I installed it and noticed that the fuel filter assembly needed replaced as well which i also installed.

The problem still is the same... New fuel line, new diesel fuel, blown air back into tank to check if any clogs, new air filter have all been installed. It seems like the tractor is getting fuel but did notice.....

the dpf lamp would flash quick 10 times when keyswitch is turned on.... so i took the DPF filter out, cleaned it, and reinstalled... Still no power, just idles.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!.
Limp home mode?

Well I had an older Chevy with a hydromechanical fuel injection system do the very same thing. It would start and idle fine but no acceleration. It turned out to be the advance mechanism in the fuel injection pump had broken. A fuel injection pump rebuild fixed it. I have never worked on a Branson but this sounds to be the very same.

Hi to me it look like the injection pump is seized on idle put some lubrication product in the fuel and when tractor is idling play with the throtle several times .

My 2005 Branson 4220 is doing the exact same thing, getting plenty of fuel to injector pump, move throttle lever by hand still only idles, this started up after sitting for awhile so I may have to take injector pump off as it may be stuck
Reason I posted this I wonder what the original poster found out last year I did not notice anything saying he fixed problem

When you move the throttle lever back & forth, can you see the cable move at the engine, maybe its loose.
Have you changed your fuel filter lately?
If you haven't used it in a while, check your air cleaner for a mouse nest.....

I use to own a 4220 tlb, great machine!

The throttle cable should be attached to a lever on the injection pump, and the lever should move when the throttle lever is moved.

Speed Test
Any advice is greatly appreciated!.
Does it sound like it's trying to increase rpms and struggling to do so? Or is it totally ignoring the throttle lever and just sitting there idling? In the latter case I'd watch the actuator arm on the FI pump while opening the throttle to see if it's moving.

It's a Branson. It starts? Good enough.

OK. DPF definitely isn't the issue then. As long as you're getting plenty of fuel to the injection pump and plenty of air to the engine. Outside of extremely low compression, about the only thing it leaves is extremely tight valve lash or injection pump is wore out. I'm assuming you've already made sure the accelerator cable is operating the pump correctly.
