Help! Damage to cylinder

/ Help! Damage to cylinder #21
If the rod is straight and undamaged, there is no reason that the part that was factory welded to it as an attaching point can't be welded back on the rod by a qualified person, or a new part made and welded on, whichever is appropriate. Installing mis-matched cylinders is a fool's errand.

To disassemble your cylinder, it sounds as if the snap ring that you have removed will allow the gland to be driven down INSIDE the barrel possibly after removing a small setscrew from the barrel's O.D. This exposes an internal snapring sitting in a groove in the barrel's I.D. Remove that second snapring and remove the rod, gland, and piston as one.

Well, I can definitely say that you kind folk have answered pretty well all my questions at this point. TBNers are the greatest! Like I said my camera is misbehaving but never the less here is a pic that kind of conveys what I did (sorry).

The disassembly process is now clear so if I decide to do a "correct" repair, I have all the info. wdchyd has described exactly what I imagined I would have been doing except I perceived I'd need a seal kit for a virtually new cylinder and shops around here charge in the neighborhood of $150/hr (parts and labour probably over $300). When I drive into town I usually end up wasting the day being steered from one place to another in crazy traffic - I try to avoid this! Doing it myself meant welding on a cylinder - never done it - nervous about it. With the collar I did welding that had no serious consequences.

So thanks again to everyone for the excellent information that will serve me well and I'll leave it at that unless I revisit the repair.

I'm not yet into my rear blade project because I decided to do some much needed organization first. Things like removing a couple disassembled cars, building an exhaust hood for welding and generally cleaning up. Oh, and playing with my newly acquired Hypertherm Powermax 45 - wow:D. I was hauling stuff to my storage using the loader when I damaged the cylinder and that's why I was trying to get it repaired ASAP.

Thanks again!!

Jack

One last comment. The final bit of leaking I was troubled with appears to have been the O-ring of the hose fitting. No more problems. Being new to this I did not think the O-ring looked bad at all but I'm guessing it's standard procedure to change them when work is done.
