The fences and the dog seem to take care of this problem as it relates to small animals. The underground fence around the property keeps the dog in the yard and he seems to do a pretty good job keeping the small animals out. It gives him a mission in life and he's on it 24x7 whether he's inside or out. I saw him get a woodchuck last year. I see a neighbor's cat sometimes parked just over the dog fence. That can be a trouble and his barking inside the house at intruders (real or imagined) can be a nusance too.

The second line of defense is the garden fence. I raised it up another 4 feet this year. I've had lots of problems with deer. In recent years they've developed the woodlands all around us and there's nowhere else for the them to be now but in backyards. There's no discharging firearms in my neighborhood. Houses are too close together here.

As far as the cat food goes if you have enough that the coons are attracted your feeding to much only feed them per lable and as much as they will eat in a sitting. That is unless you have a coon waiting on the food on the porch.

Let him go by the mayor's house.

In all seriousness, though, if you let it go near other folks' places, it just becomes their problem. I am fortunate to own some woods in a rural location where I can let things loose that I don't want to kill. But I let the skunk go right back in my yard. They don't cause any harm except to maybe the lawn when they dig for worms and grubs. I can live with that.

I HATE SKUNKS HATE HATE HATE them and their damage. I don't mind at all if they dig up the grass a thousand feet back but no they instead tear up the good grass near the house where I have to see their damage. What is really weird is the lawn areas by the house are the ones that have been TREATED to minimize the grub population so why dig there??? And, obviously you do not have any house pets, do you? One morning about 3 years ago my wife let our house cats out early in the morning before I was dressed and ready to go out and watch them, one of our two year old cats took off after a mid sized skunk. I saw it as I went out the door and thankfully got the cat back in before he went too far.

Surprisingly, skunks are pretty easy to let go out of a live trap without getting sprayed. Although, I have only done it once and lived to tell about it.

This is just not a very good idea. You can try it and I'll be happy to watch you from a distance but there is no way I would even think of attempting this. I was sprayed twice in my younger years.

Oh, I think Moss is right, if you have a trap you can open easily while keeping it covered. The skunks I have trapped let me get close enough to drop a tarp over the trap without getting upset. Once the trap is covered they don't spray (Usually?). After covering the trap, I used a pole saw to grab it and pull it away from the house. I went over 100 yds and the skunks still didn't spray. If I had a trap I could open while it was covered, I'm sure it would have gone the same way as Moss did. Skunks are actually pretty calm little beasties. My problem is the cheap traps I have are a pain to open. And I'm chicken.

Ok as for the possum in question, it will not be a problem for my garden or anybody elses. It is currently providing nourishment for the buzzards that need food too.:D

Right on! Same as Clint in Outlaw Josie Wales, when asked if he's going to bury 2 bounty hunters he says: Buzzards gotta eat too, same as worms.

I'm glad to see the skunks out your way are so mellow. Skunks here seem to have a generally poor attitude. Like doing handstands along the driveway and spraying the truck when I come home at night.

Garrison Keillor (sp?) wrote in one of his books about Lake Woebegone about a fellow who started feeding a skunk canned cat food in his dad's tractor shed, hoping one morning the skunk would blast his dad when he started up his JD. Well, the guy was in his parents bedroom and the skunk came into the house and up the stairs looking for cat food, and the guy was trying to get the skunk to go out the window, that was working well until their dog came running into the room. It ended up with the skunk spraying the bedroom and the dog and guy, finally the skunk hid under the bed and the fellow blew him away with a shotgun.

Sheesh, he needed to man up! :)

He was already sprayed? So now he has shotgun damage in the house to repair too?

Crazy.....
