( I have never owned or worked on your model of tractor. (need to say that first) Most if not all tractors don't have synros on the PTO shift. They need to have the RPM reduced so that the gears will mash easier. If you have the RPMs at a high level when you try to put the PTO in gear, you are risking jerking a tooth off of a gear. Some actually engage easier if the engine is off. )

Jerry, my main concern is with the range and gear lever grinding. I don't mind too much the PTO. It doesn't grind as much

I guess things like this are learned through experience. I just wish the manual would tell me to choose the gear first, then increase the RPM from there. Oh well. I just hope I didn't do too much damage to my transmission.

Unless you see any gears lying on the ground, I think you'll be just fine. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

When I read your original post I wondered about spinning up the implement before first picking a forward gear. But I see in your latest post you have now figured out the right technique. You are right the owner's manual could be clearer about this. The thing to keep in mind is that even though the clutches disconnect the ENGINE from the transmission(s) the spinning implement and spinning gears still have some inertia to get rid of before shifting will be smooth.
