If you use anything like 2-4D make sure you don't have any vineyards near by. You will find you made some very unhappy neighbors and also open yourself up to potential lawsuits as 2-4D is very toxic to vineyards and have damaged vineyards over a mile away from where it has been sprayed when conditions are right.

Ummm!!! Cant say we do!!! I couldnt tell your were the closest one to me,if there even is..............Did he say he lived close to one I missed that 1.....Also the same for corn, wheat, etc.None of that around here either!!! If you spraying in that kinda wind you wouldnt get an even spray anyways so why would you spray in that kinda wind(needs to be under 5mph),and I never spray up close to any pond. Its just using comin sense practices(spray drift management)(read the label)(make sure its a chemical that binds to soil and doesnt leach into ground water)you get the point. I just think spraying the weeds and killing them before shredding has been good for me.He does have to use best judgement on what chemical he uses at what times, but can be done........Get the pros to do it is another suggestion!!!!

I didn't say anything about wind but Wind drift of the spray can be an issue but the vapor is all it takes to injure the Vineyard. How do you control the vapor?

I hope the link works but I'm replying through my phone so its a little challenging to link things. Anyway, the link is from Wisconsin website talking about being careful of spraying 2-4d near vineyards. Its well known in grape country but they are just starting to establish grapes there.

I really don't think there's any need to plow, disk, and re-seed the field. As mentioned, just mowing it will help a lot, and spraying for broadleaf weeds (2,4d as well as other products) will help even more. A proper soil test just might be the biggest key. In my experience, getting a good pH and the proper fertilizer applied is a much better approach than starting over. Every time you disturb dirt, you just encourage new weeds to grow.

Look to Ohio for implements. I bought a 5 bottom hydraulic reset plow down near columbus for around $400. The plow was a semi mount MF 880 and the 5 bottom was removable making it a 4 bottom plow. That plow up here in WNY is a $2500-$4000 plow. Same with 10-12' transport discs. They are much cheaper in Ohio as the smaller farms are all gone and near Columbus a lot of the farm land is gone completely so small implements are useless there. Ebay and Craigslist are good sites to see whats around. The plow will haul back on a 16' utility trailer easily, the disc will be a little more difficult but can still be done or you can look locally if your in no hurry as they come up often.

Awe, come on Bob! I have to fight the scrap dealers and those pesty Amish at the sales for any small equipment I need. Now you want to import buyers?

Yes I do. ;-) I just hope they remember me if I help save them a few dollars.

Its crazy the price difference just a few hour drive gives you.

I know some people love their chemical. I drive through a lot of potato fields and I was always wondering about the harvesting. One day the plants are green. A few days later every plant is brown and withering. Within a week the potatoes are up and out and in the back of a truck. It finally dawned on me, weed killer to kill the plants so they won't gum up the machinery when they harvest. After that I switched to organic potatoes. I like to avoid herbicides when I can.

Now, I don't know much about potato farms, but that makess no sense at all. Are you sure that's the case ir is it an assumption? It would be cheaper and faster to just mow the plants and then harvest. Why would they spray?
I'm not paranoid about herbicides, but I don't use expensive chemicals if I don't have to, and I'm sure a professional farmer doesn't either. Though I'm sure the "organic" farmers appreciate folks that are willing to pay more.
