( 12-15 stumps to go? Time to get someone with the right equipment to do the job. A good sized excavator will pop them out of the ground in an hour or 2. Or a good sized dozer with a 6 way blade. It shouldn't cost more than a couple of hundred and think of the time and wear and tear you will save on you and your machine. )

I agree, I have spent a lifetime fighting with stumps and its much cheaper to get a cat or big hoe in for a couple hours than anything else. I have busted up my bucket and front end loader more than once until I decided to use a D6 and it poped them out in into a piles.

I agree with some other folks. Get a dozer in there and save the wear and tear on you and your equipment. If you do want to burn stumps I agree with JRP, cut both ends out of a 55 gal. drum. Soak the stump with diesel, start a fire on it, place some bricks, blocks or stones around it then place your drum upright on the bricks, etc. This provides an updraft that will speed-up the burning process.

I have removed many smaller stumps with my BX. It depends on the type of tree, live or dead, and the soil (rocks etc.) I've had box elders 10" that I could pop with the FEL. Even larger with the BH.

On the other hand I have a bunch of Locust, and they ain't moving. I have about 25 left 30"+. It took 4 hours, 2 guys, an axe, a sawz-all, pressure washer, 2 trucks, and my BX to remove 1 (12") stump cut 5 foot tall. Locust are tough. Never again.

My advice is to rent big, or hire, or grind, or a combination of the previous. That is what I'm going to do in the spring. It's not worth the ware and tear.

Just think of all the fun you can have cleaning up after the Bigger machine with your BX.

Hello Jim,
I removed a few stumps on Long Island I used a 3 ton lever chain fall. What I did was to dig around the stump with the BX22 backhoe then put the chain fall on them. once they're loose I roll them out of the hole with the hoe.The trick is to leave about six feet of trunk so you have leverage. Once you have them out of the hole cut the trunks off and roll them with the bucket loader

With 12-15 to go, I would get someone else in there to work them. Speaking from experience here, I *just* this w/e finished up raking out what was left of the burn pile left over from our clearing attempts.

The B7800 did well, but now has some battle scars from the attempts at removing about 1/4 acre of sappliings to 100 year old beeches.

Now I look at those battle scars and of course the wear and tear on both my machine and I, and realize I should have called in the right equipment at the *very* *beginning*.

Save your machine and time for something you can enjoy.
I did NOT enjoy trying to get a lot of those stumps out.

I cleared my land this spring for the house we are currently building. Had several 22" diameter stumps that needed to be removed and many in the 18" range. I rented a big hoe from the CAT dealer for about $500 and used it for about 3 days. It was still a challenge to pull some of those stumps with a huge 4wd CAT hoe!

So, I would have to agree that the best thing to do would be to either bring somebody in or rent a piece of equipment. Not sure about around there but around here the CAT Rental Store only charges me by the day based on the hours put on the unit thus I can rent a hoe on a 3 day weekend and only pay for 1 day. It might not be worth it for you but for me it payed off big time because I used it to plow over trees, etc...

Good Luck

I had thought about a come along with mine, but I like the chain hoist alot more. I started looking around for chain hoists, and it seems like I can get a five ton hoist and about 100 ft of grade 43 chain for around $450. I got an estimate today to have two trees removed and seven stumps ground for $750. It's probably a decent price, but I think I'm going to go with buying a couple large chain hoists and some chain, and pull the trees over myself. How much did the three ton chain hoist strain to pull the stump over?

Let me say this,Its not easy the 3 ton chain fall will pull them but it takes time .
I try to hook up in one direction and put a good strain on them. When it starts to roll over I change directions and pull from the opposite side eventually they get loose and fall over.
You need lots of patience.Large stumps are not easy to remove. I think Junkman has the right idea ,cut them low and let them rot.

I have personally used this same burning technique of using a leaf blower to increase the amount of draft. This definitely increases the intensity of the fire as long as you keep it going. Having said that, short of digging 6+ feet under the stump and yanking it out, removing stumps of this size is still very time consuming and hard on a BH. My recommendation is either rent someone else's equipment or hire it out./forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Good luck to you.
