just don't forget that $5 worth of paint can really increase your sell price.

Gearbox outputshaft cost and seals will cost more that worth to fix and new gearbox complete will run $400+ and your blade carrier may not fit at that--so I Would run it until it quits and then buy a new brush hog from Sweet Farm Equipment in Ky--I think they have a website and ship nationwide?--If memory serves me correctly? New HD 6 ft around $700 or less

Drill and tap a grease zerk into the box and fill it with gun grease. It will last for years like that. You can put it in the fill plug. Pump grease into it until it comes out the leaking seal. I'd grease it every couple of hours until I figured out how long an interval I could get away with.

But would you be as mechanically inclined today if you had had a $10,000 car and only spent $100 to keep it running?/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

When I get to this point I dump in 1 or 2 cans of a STP knock-off along with the grease because of "cavitation" within the gearbox with grease alone.

I think you are doing the right thing by getting rid of it. I would NOT want to runn that hog with a blade spinning and not have it supported with the correct bearings on both the top and bottom of the output shaft. What happens when that gear box lets go and the blade comes screaming out from under the cutter /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif. I'm sure something else will come along.
