Help identify grass specie

Back in September I mowed a piece of land that hadn't been grazed or mowed in many years and now this grass is showing up. The seed heads are quite unusual as there is no common stem, those colored segments are stacked on top of each other and if one breaks off the others above it are separated from the plant also. Ok, to answer my own question I was directed to this:

All I know is they pop up overnight,,,,thousands of them.

If it were around these parts it would be called some type of - horse tail. Very high in silica. Early settlers would grab a bunch and use it as a scrub brush to clean pot & pans.
